Introduction • The commerical college of Iceland is a four - year senior high school / college for student 15 year + who have completed elementary school.
Introduction • The College serves the whole of Iceland and has a student population of over a thousand students. It is organized on the basis of a form system, all students in the same classes have the same timetable. Students are in college in full-time from 8:10 - 15:40 Monday - Friday.
Introduction • The school year consists of two semesters, fall and spring. Each semester students take a full-time load of courses worth two or three credits each. • Over four years, they take a total of 140+ credits and matriculate with an Icelandic “stúdentspróf” (matriculation exam)
Introduction • In their first year all students follow a common curriculum. They then opt to specialize in one of four streams: business, science, social science or languages. • In all streams during the first two years have a strong focus on practical business courses like accounting, economics and computer studies. • These courses qualify students for the Commercial Diploma (‘verzlunarpróf’) at the end of their second year.
Semesters • The first semester begins in August and ends in December, including a four day winter break. • The second semester begins in January and ends in May, including a Easter break and a three day break because of our annual celebration.
Traditional day • In the second year students dress up in traditional Icelandic clothes and dance old traditional dances in down town Reykjavík. • In the evening students eat dinner at “Perlan” which is one of the most spectacular buildings/restaurant in Reykjavík. • After that all second year students attend a dance where there is a live band playing.
Nemendamót Verzlunarskóla Íslands • Nemendamót Verzlunarskóla Íslands or Nemó is our annual celebration. • The day starts early by the class eats breakfast together. • Later that day we see this years musical made by students in Verzló. • In the evening we eat dinner together at a restaurant, go to a pre party and then attend the big dance.
Dances • Along with the traditional day and Nemó we have five other dances. • Busaball / to welcome freshman • Jólaball / christmas dance • Þemaball / two different dances with various themes. • Lokaball / At the end of the second semester.
Schoolmagazines • Verzlunarskólablaðið which is the largest school magazine in Iceland. • Viljinn which is the oldest school magazine in Iceland. • Along with that we have two other small gossip magazines, Harmonía and Kvasir.They contain gossip about students in the school.
SchoolCompetitions • Morfís which is a debate competition between the colleges in Iceland. Verzló is now for the 14th time in the finals. • Gettu Betur is a contest between colleges who can answer the most questions correctly.
