Breast Cancer by the Numbers • 1 in 33 women will die from breast cancer • 1 in 8 women will have a cumulative lifetime risk of developing breast cancer if they live to age 85. • Every 3 minutes: someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer • Every 13 minutes: someone in the U.S. dies from breast cancer • 192,370 women and 1,910 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer • 40,170 women and 440 men will die of this disease

  16. Breast Self-Awareness (BSA) • Know Your Risk • Get Screened • Know what is normal for you • Make healthy lifestyle choices

  17. 1. Know Your Risk • Talk to your family about your family health history • Talk to your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer

Risk Factors • The most common risk factors are being female and getting older • Other risk factors include having a family history of breast cancer or certain other cancers, an inherited genetic mutation, carcinoma in situ, dense breasts, radiation exposure at a young age, reproductive factors… • There are known risk factors that you can control and others you cannot change

  19. 2. Get Screened • Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk • Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk • Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at 20, and every year starting at 40

  20. 3. Know What is Normal for You • Know how your breasts look and feel • Report changes to your health care provider right away

Lumps, hard knots or thickening Unusual swelling, warmth or redness Change in size or shape of breast Dimpling or puckering of the skin Itchy, scaly sore or rash on nipple Pulling in of nipple or other parts of the breast Sudden nipple discharge Pain in one spot that does not go away BREAST CHANGES THAT SHOULD BE EVALUATED BY YOUR DOCTOR:

  22. 4. Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices • Maintain a healthy weight • Add exercise into your routine • Limit alcohol intake

TO REVIEW… • Every woman is at risk. • When found early, the 5-year survival rate is over 98 percent in the U.S • Know your risk - talk about your health history in your family – then talk to your doctor to help you understand your personal risk. • Get screened. • Learn what is normal for you. Report breast changes to your doctor. • Make healthy lifestyle choices.
