Going inside • 2500 BC:Harappan city builds indoor toilets. • Toilets empty into a brick-lined sewer. • Technology was lost when cities were invaded (1500 BC). • Advances then took place in Europe.
Royal Flush • 1500 BC: Crete install first flush toilet. • When flushed, rainwater is released into a bowl and down clay pipes running through the palace. • An earthquake destroyed the toilet.
Really Public Bathrooms • 800 BC: Cloaca Maxima = sewer system in Rome. • Public toilets above the sewer. • 11,000 seats on stone henches--no privacy. • Only one sponge on stick for wiping.
