Types of Irony • Verbal • What a person says is opposite of what he means; sarcasm
Types of Irony • Dramatic • The audience understands the implications or meanings of a situation, but the character does not.
Example of Dramatic Irony • In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. He vows to discover his “wife’s” killer.
Types of Irony • Situational • A happening that is opposite of what is expected or intended. *** Not every plot twist is ironic!!
Situational Irony • Good example: In Matrix: Reloaded, the machines designed to be run by people instead assume power OVER people.
Situational Irony • Bad example: • In The Black Dahlia, a detective learns that his illicit lover is involved in a crime he is investigating.
