Eligibility to Apply • Currently enrolled undergraduate • Reached at least sophomore status • Have cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 by end of Fall 2012 • Passed (or are registered) for the MTTC Basic Skills Test • Completed remedial coursework in math & writing by end of this semester • Want admission to program for Fall 2013 Disclaimers: • Meeting minimum requirements does NOT guarantee admission • Essay fees and registration fees for the Basic Skills Test CANNOT be refunded if you are not admitted • The Elementary Mathematics teaching major is competitive (requires submission of Supplemental App) Students must have 56 credits by the beginning of Fall Semester 2013 to be fully admitted

Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)Basic Skills Test • www.mttc.nesinc.com • The only test you want is called the Basic Skills Test • Basic Skills Test – test number 096 • Reading • Writing • Math • Have official scores sent to MSU • Last test date to take it is Nov 10 • Late Registration Deadline is Oct 19 @ 5 pm • Test Fee $48 + Late Registration Fee $30 = $78

  5. Online Application Due Wed, Nov 28! • www.education.msu.edu • Will need Adobe PDF Viewer to access app • Logon from your MSU email account • A unique password will be sent to your MSU email. DON’T LOSE IT! • Will be able to access app as often as you like until you write on-campus essay or Nov 28 Click!

Conviction Disclosure Students, interns and teacher certification candidates are obligated to report convictions to the Certification Officer. • Students must submit a Conviction Disclosure Form (CDF) • Prior to admission to the TE program • Prior to internship placement • Prior to initial certification • After admission students are obligated to report subsequent convictions to COE Certification Officer within 5 business days and provide court documents • May be denied admission, field placement or recommendation for certification because of a conviction for a misdemeanor or felony • Failure to report a conviction or falsification could result in dismissal from the TE program • ICHAT Search (Internet Criminal History Access Tool) • Internet search for criminal history • Required for TE 301, 302, 401-408 Failure to disclose conviction history is falsification! A conviction does not disappear from your record! 6

UECP & GECP Cohort Students Must Meet ALL Admission Requirements Application Process for Cohort Students ONLY • Must have overall GPA of 2.75 by end of Fall 2012 • Must pass MTTC Basic Skills test by Nov 10 • Must answer the conviction disclosure question • Must submit any other required materials • Special Education experience forms • Supplemental App for Elementary Math Major • Cohort students need to fill out the FIRST FOUR PAGES only of the online application • First Page asks if you have read and printed the application instructions • Second Page is the Conviction Disclosure question • Third Page asks for name and contact information • Fourth Page is regarding your degree and teaching major/minors • Not required to write essay or answer experience questions If not admitted after this fall semester will need to reapply next fall and complete the entire application process including essay

Timed & Proctored Essay • Register at end of online application • $20.00 payment required at time of scheduling • Will receive email confirmation of date, time and location • PRINT and KEEP the confirmation • Once you have written the essay your online application will be closed • You will be given 1 hour to complete the essay • Software used to detect cheating is applied to all essays

  9. Timed & Proctored Essay Dates for 2012 Must Bring to Testing Site • Sat, Nov 10 • Wed, Nov 14 • Sun, Nov 18 • Wed, Dec 5 • Sat, Dec 8 • Picture identification • Your application login and password • Your essay fee receipt • Arrive at least 20 min early

Acceleration GridsFor Applicants with Junior Standing ONLY • Applicants who have earned 56 or more credits before the beginning of Fall Semester 2012 • Plan to graduate & meet internship requirements by Spring or Summer 2014 • Must complete an Elementary or Secondary Acceleration Grid • Acceleration Grids must be signed by you and your major advisor • Acceleration Grids are due to 134 Erickson Hall by Nov 28 • You will not be eligible to accelerate your program if you do not submit a grid before the deadline

Pre-Admission Experience Elementary & Secondary Special Education Majors • No documented experience necessary • Experiences working with kids helpful for essay and short answer questions • Tutoring • Camp counseling • Service learning • Coaching • Etc. • 42 hours of documented supervised experiences with special needs kids • Documentation due the first week of Spring Semester 2013 • Only students who have completed the required experience will be considered for admission to Special Education

Supplemental Application for Elementary Math Teaching Major • The Elementary Math Teaching Major is limited and requires a special application • Must complete the Supplemental App and submit it to 134 Erickson Hall by Wed, Nov 28 @ 5 pm • Applicants that don’t submit the Supplemental App CANNOT be considered for admission to the elementary math teaching major • You can be admitted to the College of Education even if you are not admitted to the elementary math teaching major • You will be notified about your admission to the elementary math teaching major by Jan 11, 2013

The Application Package & Deadlines Application Package Deadlines • Online application • Timed & proctored essay • MTTC Basic Skills Test scores • Acceleration Grid (if applicable) • Special Education pre-admission experience (if applicable) • Supplemental App for Elementary Math Teaching Major (if applicable) • Applications only accepted fall of each year • All paper materials due in a single packet by Wed, Nov 28 @ 5 pm • If, under extreme circumstances, materials are permitted to be submitted after deadline then late fees WILL apply • Late fees will also apply to essays written after the published dates

  14. Admissions Notification • Admission decisions will be emailed to your MSU account • Decisions will go out just before Spring Break • If admitted, you will be asked to return an online Reply Form to accept or deny your admission • Reply Forms must be submitted by the deadline given • Elementary, Special Education & Child Development majors can list additional teaching minor(s) on Reply Form

Elementary & Special Education Curriculum • Certification: • K-5: All Subjects • 6-8: Teaching Major • K-12: Learning Disabilities (SP ED only) • Degree Major is: • Education (elementary) • Special Education • Child Development • Teaching Major is: • Language Arts • Social Studies • Integrated Science • Math • Special Education focus is: • Learning Disabilities • Additional Teaching Options: • Any teaching minor from the approved list • Integrative Studies • Teacher Education courses • Teaching Major • Planned Program • Learning Disabilities (SP ED only) • Electives • Internship (5th year)

Secondary Education Curriculum • Certification: • 6-12: Major & Minor • K-12: Music Ed & Art Ed • Degree Major is: • The same as the teaching major (e.g. math, English) • Teaching Major is: • Any subject from the approved major list • Teaching Minor is: • Any subject from the approved minor list • College of the major oversees • Integrative Studies • Courses in major • College Requirements • College of Ed oversees • Minor completion • Teacher Education courses • Fifth-year Internship

TEACH Grant & Oral Proficiency Requirement for World Languages TEACH Grant Oral Proficiency Requirement • Undergraduates only (1st degree) • Loan forgiveness • High need fields • Math • Science • World Languages • ESL/TESOL (must be paired with high need major for secondary OR with elementary education) • Special Education • Teach in low-income/high-need districts for 4 full yrs within 8 yrs of gaining certification • See Financial Aid advisor for more info • Teaching majors and teaching minors in a world language must pass an oral proficiency exam to be certified to teach it • Secondary world language majors must pass the oral proficiency exam in order to progress to the internship
