Claude Monet • Born in Paris, France 1840 • Helped invent a style of painting called Impressionism • He loved to paint outside • He captured the outdoor light, air and atmosphere to breathe life to his paintings • He loved how colours reflect in water
*The family moved to le Havre when Monet was young*His father owned a grocery shop*As a boy Monet met all sorts of people who entered the shop*He loved to observe them
He spent much of his time drawing funny pictures at school, even his teachers! These are called caricatures. He was very good at them and was paid to draw them.
Monet often painted pictures at different times of the day to see how light changed the look of the subject. The Houses of Parliament, Sunset, 1903.
One day a friend, Eugene Boudin convinced Monet to paint pictures outside. He went in 1862 to Paris to study and made friends with Pierre Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille.
Monet tried to get his paintings accepted at the great Salon in Paris. This painting, Women in the Garden was not accepted. He used his favourite model for all four women here. Her name was Camille. They soon fell in love and married.
Monet and his friends painted in a controversial style. In those days, people wanted to see paintings about battles or historical events. The Lion Hunt by Delacroix, 1861
Monet and his friends were more interested how pretty something looked when the sun shone on it or how it reflected in water. A reporter called them “The Impressionists.” It was not meant as a compliment! That comment was made after viewing this picture.
He continued painting, showing pictures of everyday life. He was able to show steam and dampness coming from a train engine. Gare Saint-Lazare, 1877
Monet would get very close to his subject. In this picture he got so close to the sea, it splashed his painting.
When Monet was older people finally started to appreciate his paintings. He settled down in a town called Giverny and built a beautiful water garden.
In the Orangerie in Giverny, Monet created a circular painting of his pond. The effect was intended to make the viewer feel they were in the middle of the pond. Some of these panels are 13 metres long (approx 40 feet)
