  9. How Pyramid Works Level 1: Indicators Understanding the key issues and trends in a system INDICATORS What is happening? What are the trends and forecasts if nothing changes?

  10. How Pyramid Works Level 2: SystemsLooking for linkages and loops among the trends, and understanding how it all fits together SYSTEMS INDICATORS Why is it happening? What causes what? Where can change be made?

  11. How Pyramid Works Level 3: InnovationFinding new ideas that can change the system INNOVATIONS SYSTEMS INDICATORS What kinds of change would be most effective ... for the whole system?

  12. How Pyramid Works Level 4: StrategyPlanning for successful implementation of the best new ideas STEP 1: Change Theory STEP 2: Change Map STEP 3: Implement STEP 4: Assess & Repeat STRATEGIES INNOVATIONS SYSTEMS INDICATORS How do we effectively implement? What will it take to succeed?

  13. How Pyramid Works Level 5: The Capstone AgreementA commitment to carry the result of the workshop into the real world AGREEMENTS & ACTIONS STRATEGIES INNOVATIONS SYSTEMS INDICATORS

  14. How Pyramid Works The Pyramid Process Uses ISIS to build understanding, creativity, skill and agreement Resulting in Trust, Commitment, and Disciplined Implementation AGREEMENTS & ACTIONS STRATEGIES INNOVATIONS SYSTEMS INDICATORS

  23. Beginning the Workshop Step 1: Form Compass Teams • Choose a Compass Point that stretches you • Make introductions • Make an Agreement about Team Roles NATURE ECONOMY SOCIETY WELLBEING

  24. Beginning the Workshop Step 1: Form Teams • Choose a Topic Group • Go to a topic that stretches you • Make introductions • Make an Agreement about Team Roles * This slide is for when you are using a framework other than Compass

  25. Setting the Ground Rules Know the R.O.P.E.S.… for an Effective Workshop Environment: • Responsibility • Openness • Participation • Energy • Seeking Common Ground

  26. Setting the Ground Rules Team Decision-Making Process • Consensus ... OR

  27. Setting the Ground Rules Team Decision-Making Process • Consensus ... OR • Majority Vote C C D

  28. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator

  29. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator • Timekeeper

  30. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator • Timekeeper • Recorder

  31. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator • Timekeeper • Recorder • Pyramid Construction Engineer

  32. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator • Timekeeper • Recorder • Pyramid Construction Engineer • Spokesperson REPORT

  33. Setting the Ground Rules Team Roles • Facilitator • Timekeeper • Recorder • Pyramid Construction Engineer • Spokesperson REPORT

  34. Level 1: Indicators • Generate 5-10 trend indicators for your Compass Point • Prepare post-its showing the trend and its name • Show the trend over time on a scale from “Ideal” to “Collapse” • Attach the post-its to your bottom panel of the Pyramid • Build the first level of the Pyramid

  35. Methodology: Rapid Indicators NAME of Indicator IDEAL / SUSTAINABLE STEP 2: ASSESS THE PAST ... OR TWO SCENARIOS ! BARELY OK STEP 1: ASSESS STATUS TODAY STEP 3: CREATE A FUTURE SCENARIO TERRIBLE / COLLAPSE -10 Years NOW +10 Years Start with a Candidate Indicator or additional issue Create a trend graph, following these steps If data is not available, or you don’t know it, use your best professional judgment to make an estimate

  36. Pyramid Indicators: Final Instructions The final product should look like this Copy each indicator graph, and its title, onto a separate post-it note, and put the post-it notes on the first-level panel of the Pyramid Prepare a brief presentation to explain your choices to the rest of the group

  37. Level 2: Systems • Pick a top priority indicator • Make a “Systems Map” showing cause-and-effect relationships between that indicator and other indicators from around the Compass • Feel free to add indicators (issues, system elements) that were not identified at Level 1 • Identify the best Leverage Points for change • Name these Leverage Points, write them on post-it notes, and build the next layer of the Pyramid

  38. Pyramid Level 2: Systems Start with one key Indicator Create a system map Find cause/effect links to trends in all 4 Compass Points Identify Leverage Points Describe each Leverage Point (place where you can effectively make change in the system) in a phrase Put the Leverage Points on Level 2 of the Pyramid

  39. Systems Mapping Methodology NATURE YOUR ISSUE ECONOMY WELLBEING -10 Years NOW +10 Years SOCIETY

  40. Systems Mapping Methodology NATURE CAUSE CAUSE YOUR ISSUE ECONOMY WELLBEING CAUSE CAUSE -10 Years NOW +10 Years CAUSE SOCIETY

  46. Sample System Map(Note: Text is in Latvian!)

  47. Pyramid Level 3: Innovation Review the system maps and the information on the Pyramid ... let your mind wander Brainstorm ideas for changes that could be made at a leverage point (or at several leverage points) Share your best ideas with your group Each group picks up to three ideas, and prepares a very short presentation about those ideas (2 minutes per group!) Put the titles of your ideas on the Pyramid

  48. Level 4: Strategy • Use a preference voting technique (“dot game”) to choose the best idea • THEN • Play the “Amoeba Game” AND / OR • Do a “SWOT” analysis of the highest-ranking idea(s) and make a plan of implementation

  49. Level 5: Capstone • Frame a group consensus agreement resulting from the Pyramid, place this on top of the Pyramid OR • Have each individual make a written commitment for an individual follow-up action, place those inside the Pyramid • The group places the capstone on the Pyramid all together ... take a group photo!

  50. You’re done! Congratulations on building the Pyramid! Now it’s time to turn what you learned or decided into action!
