AustralianEconomy • Politically stable and safe • Strategic location: gateway to Asia • Strong and stable financial system • By 2012, Australia had experienced more than 20 years of continued economic growth, averaging 3.5% a year • Australia was comparatively unaffected by the global financial crisis • Australia plays an active role in the World Trade Organization, APEC, the G20, and other trade forums.

Import and Export • Metals, coal and oil and natural gas account for 54 percent of total exports. • Australia is a major importer of machinery and transport equipment, computers and office machines and telecommunication lasers. • Australia’s main trading partners are: China, Japan, the United States, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The Netherlands in Australia • More than 400 years ago, sailors of the Dutch East Indies Company became the first Europeans to set foot on Australian soil. • The Netherlands is the biggest foreign investor in Australia of the European Union and the 5th foreign investor in Australia worldwide. • Significant exports to Australia included medicinal products, ships and boats, refined petroleum and pumps. • Dutch companies: Shell, Unilever, Heineken, Philips, ING, Randstad, Damen, DSM, Achmea, Rabobank
