  5. WELCOME THE CLASS OF 2022OUR KIDS HAVE PRIDE Mrs. Luzzi your School Counselor

  6. What is M.A.P.? M.A.P. - Middle School Advisory Program Students meet with a M.A.P. group (approximately 12 students) once each day for ten minutes. Students discuss a wide range of middle school topics and participate in organized activities. Extended Map Activities Once a month, MAP groups meet for approximately 30 minutes to work on a culminating activity.

Clubs and Activities Clubs meet during zero period on Mondays and Wednesdays Students may participate in intramurals during zero period Art, Book, Climate, Computer, Drama, First Lego, Grandpals, Math Olympiad, Newspaper, School Store, Science Olympiad, Service, Student Council, Yearbook, Robotics September Club Fair – period 9

Preparing for the 2018/2019 School Year Dr. Buck and Mrs. Luzzi visited students: Old Bethpage Elementary – May 22 @ 9:45 am Parkway Elementary – May 24 @ 9:45 am Students will visit MMS on: Old Bethpage Elementary – June 12 @ 9:45 am Parkway Elementary – June 1 @ 9:45 am Student Ambassadors will visit with students: Old Bethpage Elementary – June 7 @ 9:45 am Parkway Elementary – June 8 @ 9:45 am

  11. Typical arrival time 8:30 - M.A.P. (8:40 -8:50 am) 8 period instructional day (8:40 am until 2:50 pm) 5 periods for core classes, 2 periods for specials & 1 period for lunch 41-minute instructional periods / 4-minute passing time Students transition from class to class throughout the day Lunch (Period 5) & Recreation Zero & Ninth Period - Zero Period Activities: Clubs, Music Groups - Ninth Period Activities: Extra-Help & Music Groups Typical Day at MMS

  12. 5th Grade Program Teaming Students are typically on a team of two teachers for their four core subject areas: Math, Social Studies, Science and ELA English Language Arts (ELA) is a double period block Students travel as a group from class to class Each team has approximately fifty students. Class size will be approximately 25 students per class

  18. School Supplies • Required school supplies will be posted on the website prior to the end of the school year. • The supply list is a general list for all 5th grade students. • Each team will have a few additional supplies that are needed.

Student Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures Drop-Off (7:30 & 8:20 am) Students must be dropped off in the A-House circle Please pull forward to allow other parents to enter the loop Do not drop off a child in the passing lane where a child would have to cross with moving traffic Please do not drop off at B, C & D-House Pick-Up (2:50 & 3:35 pm) All students must be picked up in the loop in the back of D-House

Communication with Home and School • Twitter handle: @HBMattlin1 • Please make sure we have your most current e-mail address! • Every Five Weeks – Progress Report/Report Card (Rubric grading in K-4 and at Mattlin student’s receive an overall grade) • Parent Portal on Infinite Campus • Parent-Teacher Conferences • Communicate with your child’s teacher

  22. One to One Initiative Initiative has been expanded to all students (5–8). Students are able to use their ChromeBooks throughout the school day. Students take their ChromeBooks home with them each day. Please make sure that your child charges his/her ChromeBook each night.

Tips from the Teachers • Know that your children are in good hands, even though you may have concerns about them coming to middle school as 5th graders • Encourage your child to use his/her agenda book to record homework on a daily basis • Emphasize the importance of reading every night (books, magazines, articles, newspaper, etc) • Help ensure that your child is charging his/her ChromeBook each night
