  2. Objective RL 7.7- Compare and Contrast a written story to its multimedia version. Analysis the effects of that media compared to the written story.

  3. Definition: Compare What two or more things have in common- the similarities Contrast What two or more things don’t have in common- the differences

  4. Purposes: • It helps you to better comprehend what you read • It exercises your higher level thinking skills • It is a skill used in all content areas- science, social studies, unified arts • It helps in making judgments about the similarities and differences between items/people

  5. Compare Words: similar, in common, alike, compare Contrast Words: different, contrast, dissimilar

Pole Skiing requires the use of pole Snowboarding does not require a pole Riding Skiing – you ride forward and turn sideways Snowboarding – you always ride sideways This example has no quote as evidence since it was not from a book, so you have to go with the BEST possible DETAILED explanation.

  12. How do I find a category? • Look for: • relationships • groups • patterns • traits • Try to be thoughtful – don’t give obvious or simple answers

Example: What is similar about the following items?An orange and a carrot Possible answers: healthy foods, things that are orange, things that do not have a smooth surface, items that can be cut or chopped, ingredients used in cooking, foods high in beta carotene Too obvious/simple would be food. Turn to your neighbor and discuss other categories that they could share – try to be thoughtful and find categories that could be supported with evidence.

  14. Multiple Choice: Make sure your answer MATCHES what is asked. Check the text to verify whether items are similarities or differences in characters or ideas

  15. Summary Turn and talk with a neighbor about 3 things your learned or relearned about Compare and contrast. Write it in the summary section.

  18. Get Ready! • On a piece of notebook paper make TWO compare/contrast charts. • ONE on the FRONT; A SECOND on the BACK • Leave the titles blank, just make the charts.

Your Task Fill in your chart to help you answer the following question! *Remember to use: C-E-E-R in your chart.* According to the selections, what is one similarity and one difference between the text version and the movie version? Provide information from the selection to support your answer.

  21. Fish Bowl Quickly get in a group of 8-10 students. 4-5 are the inner circle. Your job is to discuss the similarities between the Text vs Movie The rest form an outer circle and LISTEN to their discussion take notes on your chart Switch roles: This time the inner circle talks about the differences between the text vs. movie.

  25. Finished? When you are finished with your Compare and Contrast chart. Turn it into your teacher. Now you may enjoy your fair share amount of the veggie snack! And you say we never have fun or hands on learning in ELA…Ha!
