American Physical Therapy AssociationAcademy of Pediatric Physical Therapy 2018: Year in Review
What’s the latest with the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy?
An Updated Strategic Plan for the Academy Each year, APPT has a Strategic Planning Meeting to determine our direction and update the Strategic Plan. Updates are based on feedback received from our Annual Member Surveyand input from Academy leaders. In October 2017, APPT did a comprehensive review and overhaul of our Strategic Plan, with 35 Academy leaders participating in a facilitated meeting in Alexandria, VA. The leadership updated of our mission, vision, and values and created a new Strategic Plan to take us through 2020.
APPT Mission, Vision, Values: Mission: Advance pediatric physical therapy through excellence in advocacy, education, and research. Vision: Optimize movement for lifelong meaningful participation of all children. Values: The Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy is committed to: accountability, collaboration, consumer-centric care, innovation, professionalism, and social responsibility.
APPT Strategic Plan Goals: • ADVOCATE: Advocate for meaningful participation of all children. • EDUCATE: Enhance educational pathways to practice in pediatric physical therapy. • ELEVATE: Elevate pediatric physical therapist practice through the application of evidence. • LEAD: Be a relevant, innovative, agile and responsible organization.
APPT Governance Review • After APPT updated the Strategic Plan, leaders met in August 2018 for a facilitated Governance Review to make sure that the Academy is structured efficiently to best support our core mission and strategic goals. • In a unanimous decision, the Governance Review team and APPT Board proposed updating the structure of the Board of the Directors to more directly align with the Academy’s goals, by changing the 7 Directors from representation based on region to representation based on goals. The Board will remain at 11 voting members. • These changes were made to the APPT bylaws, along with other changes for best practice, such as removing dues information, adding an indemnification clause, and editing for clarity, and were shared with APPT membership in November. The vote on the amended bylaws happens at the APPT Business Meeting at CSM.
If the Bylaw Changes Are Approved, How Will the Transition Happen? • Should the bylaw vote pass, leadership will spend the next few months finalizing the new Director job descriptions in preparation for a one-time special election in the Fall of 2019 to elect all 7 goal-based Directors into staggered terms. (All 7 non-officer Directors will begin their terms at CSM 2020, but 2 Director terms will end in 2021, 3 in 2022, and 2 in 2023; terms for Executive Committee members will remain the same.) Current Regional Directors will continue to serve in their current roles during the year-long transition. • The proposed goal areas will be Practice, Research, Professional Development, Academic & Clinical Education, Communications, Leadership, and Advocacy. If you’d like to run for one of these positions, contact the Nominating Committee or pediatrics@apta.org!
