1 A Simple Network
1 Characteristics of a computer network • Share Resources from one computer to another • Create files and store them in one computer, access those files from the other computer(s) connected over the network • Connect a printer, scanner, or a fax machine to one computer within the network and let other computers of the network use the machines available over network.
1 Advantages of a Computer Network.
1 Following is the list of hardware's required to setup a computer network. • Network Cables • Distributors • Routers • Internal Network Cards • External Network Cards
Basic Components of a Network • Server: In computer networking, a server is a computer designed to process requests and deliver data to other (client) computers over a local network or the Internet.
Basic Components of a Network • Workstation: A typical workstation is a computer that is configured with a network interface card, networking software and the appropriate cables.
Basic Components of a Network • Hub: Hub is a device that splits a network connection into multiple computers. It is like a distribution center.
Transmission Channels • Computer in a network is interconnected through transmission channels. • These channels can be wired(cables) and wireless(satellites).
Computer Network Types • PAN:A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for data transmission amongst devices such as computers, telephones, tablets and personal digital assistants.
LAN: - LAN networks connect computers together over relatively small distances, such as within a single building or within a small group of buildings.
WAN: - WAN networks connect computers together over large physical distances.
MAN: -This is a network which is larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, and incorporates elements of both. It typically spans a town or city and is owned by a single person or company, such as a local council or a large company.
