  2. Gregorian Chant • Pope Gregory the Great • Visited by a dove who sang him the melodies for the chant. • Text was in Latin 2 Types: • Monophonic: One voice part • Polyphonic: multiple voice parts

  3. Catholic Mass Mass: a representation of the Last Supper set to music. • Text was in Latin 2 main types: • Ordinary: remained the same everyday. • Proper: changed day to day for feasts and holidays.

  4. Order of the Mass • Introit: introductory prayer • Kyrie: “Kyrie Eleison” meaning “Lord, have mercy” • Gloria: praising God the Father and Christ • Gradual: sung after the reading of the Epistle followed by the Alleluia • Credo • Offertory: Priest breaks the bread and pours the wine and blesses it. • Sanctus • Agnus Dei • Communion: eating of the bread and wine • Ite, missa est: dismissal

Southern Gospel Music • Originated in the Southeastern United States to express either personal or a communal faith regarding Biblical teachings and Christian life. • Sometimes known as “quartet music” because of its set up of 4 men and a piano. • Originated around 1910 with “convention songs” • Homophonic: the singers sing the same words and rhythms, but different notes. • Contrapuntal sections: singers each have their own unique rhythm. • Called “Convention songs” because they were sang at conventions that taught quartet members how to focus on singing their own part.

  6. Quartet Members 4 members: • Tenor: higher part • Lead: usually sings the melody • Baritone: adds a lower harmony part to the lead • Bass: sings the lower end of the notes Heavenly Parade, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound

  7. Shape Note Music Conventions songs are written using shaped notes that would help the singers know which note they were supposed to sing It was used in music schools to teach singers their parts for singing convention songs.

  8. Shape Note Singing: Oh Happy Day, The Cathedral Quartet At Gospel concerts and events, some groups will try and see how high their tenor singers can sing. Looking For A City, Vestal Goodman and Johnny Cook

  9. Modern Contemporary Christian Music Although some churches still use conventions songs during their services, A lot of churches have moved on to using contemporary Christian Music. Contemporary Christian Music takes aspects of pop, country, and rock styles to create a style of music that younger generations of people will enjoy listening to while receiving the Gospel Message. Many of these artists have become known nationwide, and are using their music to spread the message throughout the World. Some of these artists include: Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Lauren Daigle, and Hillary Scott

  10. Casting Crowns Christian band from Georgia that have some of the most influential songs on the radio today. Made up of 7 members Songs: • Oh My Soul • Courageous

  11. Lauren Daigle Born in Lafayette, Louisiana. Released her first album in 2015 and has quickly become one of the most well-known Christian artists today. Her songs include: • How Can It Be • Trust In You

  12. Hillary Scott Born in Nashville, Tennessee. She started as a singer with the country group Lady Antebellum, and still sings with them today. She released her first solo Christian album in 2015 and it won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Album and Best Contemporary Christian Performance/Song for Thy Will

  13. MercyMe Christian band from Greenville, Texas Formed in 1994 and released their first major album in 2001. They are most popular for their song I Can Only Imagine.
