  2. Objective: Chapter 1 Lesson 1 A Plan for Problem Solving

  3. Four Step Plan: Explore: Read the problem carefully. Ask yourself questions like, “What facts do I know?” and “What do I need to find out?” Plan: See how the facts relate to each other. Make a plan for solving the problem. Estimate the answer. Solve: Use your plan to solve the problem. If your plan does not work, revise it or make a new plan. Examine: Reread the problem. Ask, “Is my answer close to my estimate?” Ask, “Does my answer make sense for the problem?” If not, solve the problem another way.

  4. Example 1: Tyler delivers newspapers each week day. If Tyler works every weekday for one year, how many days does he work?

  5. Do this… To help out an injured news carrier, Tyler delivered newspapers on weekends for one-half of a year. Including his weekday deliveries, how days did he work that year?

  6. Try these… A record weight for a red snapper was 46 pounds.A record weight for a sturgeon was 468 pounds. About how many times heavier than the red snapper was the sturgeon? The distance from Chicago to Cleveland is 344 miles. Lisa plans to drive this distance in two days. If she drives 180 miles today, how many miles will she have to drive tomorrow?

  7. Try these… On a certain day, 525 people signed up to play softball. If 15 players are assigned to each team, how many teams can be formed? The Smith family wants to buy a VCR that costs $460. They plan to make a down payment of $100 and pay the rest in eight equal payments. What will be the amount of each payment?

  8. Try these… Joan received $50 as a gift. She plans to buy two cassette tapes that cost $9 each and a deluxe headphone set that cost $25. How much money will she have left? Tom wants to buy a bicycle that cost $192. He plans to save $6 each week. How many weeks will it take him to save enough money?
