History of The Name and How It Was Found Lawrencium is named after Ernest O. Lawrence, who created the cyclotron. The Cyclotron is a particle accelerator, that accelerates the particles from the center along a spiral path, using a radio frequency electric field. Albert Ghiorso, Torbjørn Sikkeland, Almon E. Larsh and Robert M. Latimer discovered the element at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1961.
