  1. MPS Commissioning • MPS commissioning may be split roughly in 2 parts : • A technical commissioning of all interlock system clients to ensure that all systems work properly. • >> this part is discussed today! • A beam commissioning where correct settings must be established to provide protection up to a defined energy/intensity (collimator & absorber positions, BLM thresholds…).

  2. LHC BIS Overview Injection Interlock LHC Devices Movable Detectors Beam Loss Monitors BCM Experimental Magnets Environmental parameters Collimator Positions LHC Devices Safe Beam Parameter Distribution LHC Devices Safe LHC Parameter Software Interlocks Sequencer Operator Buttons CCC LHC Experiments Transverse Feedback and RF Beam Aperture Kickers Collimation System SpecialBLMs Beam Dumping System Beam Interlock System Safe Beam Flag Powering Interlocks sc magnets Powering Interlocks nc magnets Magnet Current Monitor Beam loss monitors BLM Beam LifetimeFBCM Access System Vacuum System Screens / Mirrors BTV Timing System (Post Mortem Trigger) Monitors aperture limits (some 100) Monitors in arcs (several 1000) Magnets Power Converters MPS (several 1000) Power Converters ~800 AUG UPS Cryo OK Doors EIS Vacuum valves Access Safety Blocks RF Stoppers

  3. BIS core Beam Interlock System • User connection tests in progress, finished ~ beginning July. • >> When a connection is tested, can start MPS tests for the associated system. • Beam permit loop robustness tests in progress (all inputs disabled) • Driven by B. Puccio & his team.

  4. LHC Machine Protection Powering System>50% of all interlocks • PIC: • Majority of interlocks are commissioned during HC: • Missing : PIC-BIC connection / mapping of circuits (unmask, mask, ignore) • PIC-BIC test to be done with the sequencer, ready by ~ July (needs BIC input add-on). • Time requirement : ~ 1 day/2 shifts per sector pair. • Requires 2 adjacent sectors available & reserved for the tests. • Effort driven by Markus Z., Alvaro … Beam Interlock System Powering Interlocks sc magnets Powering Interlocks nc magnets Magnet Current Monitor • WIC + FMCM: • Require powering of nc circuits. • Test can be done together with PIC tests: • >> Proposal is to join with PIC tests • Smaller number of tests wrt PIC >> manual tests ? Magnets Power Converters MPS (several 1000) Power Converters ~800 AUG UPS Cryo OK

  5. LHC Machine Protection Vacuum System • Vacuum valves in one octant (including long straight section) can only be opened when conditions allow for opening, (magnets cold etc.). • Details to be defined: • Test (open/close) every single valve. • Random sample testing • Effort driven by Gianluigi, BIS team and VAC Team. • Need to wait for later stage of HC. Beam Interlock System Vacuum System Vacuum valves Access Safety Blocks RF Stoppers

  6. LHC Machine Protection Collimation System Environmental parameters Collimator Positions • Collimator interlocks include position & env. parameters. • Tests do not interfere with HC – relatively independent. • Settings and tests have been agreed upon, comm. driven the collimation team: • Specs being updated. • General strategy is defined, with automated sequences to probe every sensor. • Starting soon… Collimation System Beam Interlock System

  7. LHC Machine ProtectionBeam Dumping System Beam Dumping System Beam Interlock System • Ongoing ‘testing’ during dry runs (with special BIS configuration), but such dry runs are not really MPS tests ! • With LBDS ~every test is related to MPS: • IST spec seems to exist – lots of testing done/ongoing (EC dixit) • The MPS spec is …. basically empty – must cover non IST, for example Beam Energy Tracking (BETS) system. • >> Rather urgent need to define the tests (LBDS team) • BETS tests can only be performed when all energy sources are connected: • MSDs, Q4s, kickers • MBs 4-5, MBs 5-6, MBs 6-7, MBs 7-8 (½ of the machine !)

  8. LHC Machine Protection Beam Loss Monitors Beam Interlock System Beam loss monitors BLM • Another special system: ISTs and MPS tests are basically the same, since almost every function of the BLMs is associated to MP! • MPS spec in medium state, IST spec much better: • Replace MPS spec with IST spec? • IST spec check ? • Most of the effort will be driven by the BLM team, coordination with MPS commissioning to be sorted out in the coming days. Monitors aperture limits (some 100) Monitors in arcs (several 1000)

  9. LHC Machine Protection BTVs Beam Interlock System Screens / Mirrors BTV • Tests are straight-forward and can be done as soon as BIC connection is ready & BTVs ready to move. • The possibility to re-use the automated test SW of the SPS transfer lines is under investigation (JW). • Driven by R.Giachino & JW.

  10. LHC Machine Protection Experiments Movable Detectors Beam Loss Monitors BCM Experimental Magnets • Test categories: • Magnets – must test the interlock on fault state. • Movable detectors : VELO, ALICE ZDC & ??? • ‘Emergency dump’ : whoever is ready (ATLAS, LHCb & ??). • Injection inhibit • Not a lot of work, mostly coordination. • Alick has (been) volunteered…. LHC Experiments Beam Interlock System

  11. LHC Machine ProtectionInjection System Injection Interlock • Partly tested during dry runs. • Relatively ‘modest’ system, many inputs are similar to ring and transfer line interlock systems: • Vacuum. • BLMs. • MKI. • FMCM. • Collimators. • Tests of the extraction interlock master BIC done together with TL interlock tests (a significant part already done). • In hands of Verena, Jan & JW. Beam Interlock System

  12. LHC Machine ProtectionOther systems • Operator button – straightforward (Bruno with the BIS Team) • Aperture Kicker • Injection Kicker • Beam Position IR6 : • there is not much one can do before beam. • RF and Transverse Feedback : • only cryo interlock on RF for the startup. • Beam Current Monitor • Access System

  13. SIS General • LHC SIS is not as critical for safe operation at the LHC as the SPS SIS is for the SPS and some of its lines. • LHC SIS will produce 4 signals : • Injection inhibit beam 1 and beam 2 >> injection BICs • Beam dump both beams >> CCR BIC • (Some) alarms • >> initially favour alarms over beam dumps (reliability of clients!) • SIS running since a few months (also stress test) with a period of 2 seconds between signal updates. • Signals are not yet send to the BICs to avoid interferences with BIS commissioning – but can be armed any time. • Configuration not yet final – waiting for some signals appear in the control system.

  14. SIS Commissioning • Largest interlock group : • State of ~800 (non-PICed) cold orbit correctors >> inj. inhibit. • Configuration ready to be tested. • Could be automated with sequencer. • Many smaller groups that will require dedicated time to cycle through states, modes etc : • BTVs >> inj. inhibit • Integrated field of CODs >> beam dump – requires the complete machine ! • Current limits on separation dipoles & MCBX >> inj. inhibit (exp. protection @ injection). • RF cryo >> inj. inhibit (& beam dump ?) • Energy & intensity limits (MPS limits) >> beam dump • … whatever pops up… • I’m in charge…

  15. Summary • MPS commissioning effort to start soon, mostly likely beginning of July: • All BIS connections ready. • Major systems (powering, collimators, …) ready with test SW/sequences: • - Powering comm. could be done in ~ 8 shifts • ‘Clarifications’ are needed for BLMs and LBDS. • Safe machine parameter commissioning to be defined, BIS team & Alick.
