Rate determining steps A chemical equation compares reactants and products. The balancing gives the stoichiometry, the relative amounts of each species in a reaction. For example: Why is it unlikely that this reaction will not happen in one step?
Rate determining steps Reactions like this are more likely to occur in a series of steps because of the unlikelihood that more than 2 particles will collide together at the same time. The series of steps involved in a reaction is called the reaction mechanism
The rate-determining step of a reaction determines the overall speed of a reaction. The rate determining step is the slowest step in the reaction mechanism.
Predicting reaction mechanisms Chemists use their knowledge and understanding of rates to propose possible mechanisms for reactions. This is based on two points: • The rate equation only includes reacting species involved in the rate-determining step • The orders in the rate equation match the number of species involved in the rate-determining step

Predicting reaction mechanisms Hydrolysis of haloalkanes: Haloalkanes are hydrolysed by hot aqueous alkali: RBr + OH- ROH + Br- The hydrolysis reactions of haloalkanes can be investigated experimentally to determine the overall order of reaction, the rate equation and a possible mechanism for the reaction
