Physical Level:In exposition: listed, full colour silver plated gelatine print Size: c.a. 250 x 100 Shot for New York Times Magazine Depictivelevel: At first sight you might thing the frame seems passive, but it’s actualyan active frame. The frame cuts buildings on all sides. The woman on the swing (maya) enters the world of the photograph and is fixed at the center of the image. These things together gives us the optical illusion of depth, while looking at the flat object. Time Just one split second is fixed in the image. We can see she is/ was moving (swinging) because of her posture, and her hair. Still the image is sharp. This asks for a high ISO-rate and short exposure. Focus At centre the image is most sharp, the edges and depth of the Image are more and more blurry. This enlarges the optical illusion of depth
Mental Level:The picture “feels” like you’re real high. Since our focus shifts while reading the content of the flat image, we mentally experience depth and wideness Mental Modeling:We’ve all experienced looking over a landscape from great hight. And everybody has been on a swing experienced of the rush inside and wind blowing through your hair as you swing. The photograph taps on to this all time (childhood) memory, and leads us to thinking/ feeling/ imagining seeing ourselves on this swing high above world’s skiline .

Physical Level: Projection of digital reproduction of a photograph Analogic area, multiple shades of grey Depictive level: Active frame chosen, probably to isolate this small part of world into its own, and rule out any kind of distraction the photo, taken in the 80’s did not change in time, the world did…or has it? The photograph is sharp, and since the imaged world only contains these two subjects, all focus is on them. Closed up, with his nose right in the middle. Mental Level/Mental Modelling: as shifting our focus and reading the picture, by instance I doubt my eyes and wonder if I see this right, or if it’s my mental model telling me I see a man eating harry pussy. Is it her pubic hair? Or might it be his moustache? I’d call it an mind-fuck. Today, it might just be a funny picture. But back in the day, as you can see, most people didn’t shave their genitals. Neither were explicit erotic based pictures as accepted and infiltrated in media & society.
