Act 5, scene 1 • Themes: Critiques of society and death (suicide) • Gravedigger as as “clown” • Conversation between Gravedigger and Other • What are they disputing? • What do they think is the reason for Ophelia’s Christian burial? (5.1.24-26) • Meaning of “arms” (5.1.30-40) • Hamlet is offended by the Gravedigger’s singing (5.1.70) and is very bothered by the skulls and laments their irony (politician, courtier, lawyer, Yorick) • Hamlet and Laertes fight in Ophelia’s grave. Did Hamlet really love her?
