The Homeless • Due to the Unemployment, the number of homeless was on the rise • Many people lost there houses • Hoovervilles
Hoovervilles • Shacks made of cardboard, sheet metal, and plywood • Named after President Herbert Hoover. • Central Park
Boxcar Children • Teenagers left their homes and road on trains for long periods of time
Farmers • Farmers World War I produced record numbers • Prices fell – more production • Farmers went bankrupt and many of them lost their farms • Weather was also terrible for crops during this time- Dust Bowl
Starvation • Hoover- “Nobody is actually starving. The hobos are better fed than they have ever been” • 1931- 20 deaths in New York • 1934- 110 deaths
Breadlines • Many Breadlines were formed during the Great Depression • Supported by churches, missions, and charities
