  3. Introduction • Several projects were performed in Korea in the past ten years to implement metadata registries based on ISO/IEC 11179 standard. • A couple of experimental studies were performed to show what ISO/IEC 11179 MDR means in some domains during the early stage. • After that, a project were performed to implement an MDR in industrial domain using top-down approach. • Recently, another project has been performed using bottom-up approach in bibliographic domain. • In this session I will review metadata standardization activities and projects performed in Korea and look out over standardizing and implementing MDR in Korea.

  21. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (1) • Many attempts have been performed to make metadata crosswalks: • LC, OCLC, Getty, UKOLN, IEEE, … • Simple crosswalks are not enough. • Semantic metadata mapping is required. • ISO/IEC 11179 standard provides good provisions for metadata semantics. • Crosswalks can be properly used only when a specific domain is involved.

  22. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (2) Semantic Metadata Mapping Process • To set up a process for making metadata crosswalks conform to ISO/IEC 11179 standard. • Semantic metadata mapping (SMM) process ISO/IEC 11179 MDR (N:1) DEC CD (1:N) (1:N) (N:1) DE VD MARC GILS DC ONIX … Crosswalk

  23. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (3) Overall Process 1st Collecting metadata schema 2nd Grouping attributes 3rd Finding common DECs 4th Mapping into a table • The 2nd and 3rd steps can be replaced by each other. • The process is applicable to a specific domain only.

  24. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (4) Application to e-Book • Domain: e-Book • (1st) Available metadata sets: OpenEBPS, MODS and TEI • primary metadata set: OpenEBPS

  25. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (5) Application to e-Book • (2nd) Grouping attributes

  26. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (6) Application to e-Book • (3rd) Constructing common DECs based on 11179: • Object class: e-Book • Properties: title, author, subject, abstract, publisher, distributor, authority, contributor, publication-date, genre, format, extent, identifier, language, coverage-geographic, coverage-temporal, right, location, edition • DECs: ebookTitle, ebookAuthor, ebookSubject, ebookAbstract, ebookPublisher, ebookDistributor, ebookAuthority, ebookContributor, ebookPublication-date, ebookGenre, ebookFormat, ebookExtent, ebookIdentifier, ebookLanguage, ebookCoverage-geographic, ebookCoverage-temporal, ebookRight, ebookLocation, ebookEdition

  27. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (7) Application to e-Book • (4th) Mapping into a table

  28. Metadata Crosswalk for Bibliographic Information (8) Summary and Future Work • A Semantic Metadata Mapping (SMM) process to make metadata crosswalks was established. • Types of metadata mapping were suggested to show how to harmonize between correspondent attributes. • Crosswalks among OpenEBPS, MODS and TEI headers were obtained to apply to e-Book. • The SMM process will be elaborated in order to be proposed as a new work item in ISO/IEC JTC1/SC32 this year.

  29. National Metadata Center Perspective • Two Main Measures for Implementing Active MDR • Training metadata people • Too small number of standard engineer • Institutionalize to enforce use of MDR • Development without application is useless Library MDR Educational MDR Scientific MDR Cultural MDR Industrial MDR *** MDR
