Mission Information Mission San Juan Capistrano has been home to many people over 230 years of history. Also, it is a place of historical, cultural, and religious significance, as well as a place of inspiration and education. The story begins in 1755 when Mission San Juan Capistrano was first founded by Father Lasuen on October 30th. But the mission was re-found on November 1, 1776.
Mission Tradition • This is what the people of San Juan Capistrano do for their tradition. Over the last 200 years, San Juan Capistrano has continued to serve its Catholic community. Although founded in the Catholic tradition, the sight of itself brings a sense of peace and deep spirituality to visitors of all faith traditions . * Each year swallows come to San Juan Capistrano.
People of San Juan Capistrano • These are the people of San Juan Capistrano. The neophytes at San Juan Capistrano included members of other Takic speaking tribes, particularly the Cupeño ( a small linguistic group in the Warner Ranch area ) and Cahuilla ( who occupied the valleys and hills to the east of the mission.)
Mission Geography This is the mission geography of San Juan Capistrano. Mission San Juan Capistrano was built from adobe bricks and tiles ( for the roofs). It has arches, a bell tower, and a quadrangle. Mission San Juan Capistrano had six buildings. They were a storeroom, work shop, the Great Stone Church, a bell wall, the Serra Chapel, and a room for the soldiers.
Mission Agriculture • The beautiful gardens of San Juan Capistrano. The people who lived at the San Juan Capistrano grew many crops and plants. They harvested bushels of wheat, barley, corn, peas, lentils, garbanzos, and habas. The mission is also location of California’s first winery. In 1779, Criollo grape was planted. This made wine and brandy.
Mission Founders • Father Fermin Lasuen • Father Junipero Serra Mission San Juan Capistrano was first founded on October 30, 1775, by Father Fermin Lasuen, abandoned because of rumors of Indian attacks and re-founded November 1, 1776 by Father Junipero Serra.
Mission History • History Pictures For over the next 30 years since 1776, San Juan Capistrano grew in population, buildings, livestock, and prominence. By 1806, mission San Juan Capistrano had a population of over a 1,000 people, over 10,000 head of cattle and a completed architectural gem, The Great Stone Church.
