Prepare for Learning PfL In Pairs answer the questions below? Can you think of as many types of waste as you can which a business may encounter? E.g. time – waiting for production to start.
Why emphasis on waste? WASTE = COST More Cost = Reduced Profit…
Prepare for Learning PfL Lean Production – Using LESS resources in production process. Can you identify some principle of lean production? Lean Prouction Intro Video
2 types of lean production • Kaizen (Continuous improvement) • Just in time production (JIT)
1. Kaizen Kaizen (or ‘continuous improvement’) is an approach of constantly introducing small incremental changes in a business to improve productivity.
How Kaizen works Can you think of any drawbacks of kaizen? Small improvements are less likely to require major capital investment than major process changes. Ideas come from the talents of the existing workforce, who must be up to the task!
2. Just-in-time Just-in-time (“JIT”) aims to ensure that inputs into the production process only arrive when they are needed p.216 A2 text Lean production
How does JIT work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this system? Based on a "pull" system of production - customer orders determine what is produced. Supplies delivered to production line only when needed. Very little storage of stock on site.
Workers Impact • Lean Production relies heavily on the workers capabilities. • Workers should be excellent team players with good initiative. • Good initiative enable staff to contribute ideas to management. • They should have multiple skills and ability to plan their own work schedule.
2 + connectives • Identify some areas of waste in a business? • What is lean production? • What does kaizen mean? • Explain Just in time? • What’s the difference between kaizen and JIT? • What is a disadvantage with Kaizen for the worker • What are 2 advantages of JIT for the firm • Which system is best for a food manufacturer? • Evaluate the best option for a car manufacturer seeking to cut waste? 3 + connectives 5 + connectives
