  1. Twenhofel Middle School The Construction of a Wetland Project By Beth Davis .

  2. Project Goals • Create a wetland on the school property for our students at Twenhofel, as well as the surrounding schools to use. • Construct a naturally appearing, oval-shaped wetland for use in environmental studies • Enhance the appearance of the school grounds • Develop interdisciplinary curriculum to be taught through wetlands activities

  3. Project Rationale • A wetland on the premise will allow hands-on activities and allow the students to look at organisms in their natural habitat. • Lack of funds for field trips • On-site wetland allows across the curriculum lessons that are endless! • Easy access

  4. Project Rationale continued • Wetlands can be used as an integrating concept to teach science, reading, math, art, and social studies • According to one national study, 100% of schools with environment-based learning had students with improved behavior, attendance, and attitudes relative to traditional schools (KAEE) • Wetlands make learning fun!

  5. Project Outline(See Word document for further details) • Approval • Funding-- • Available grants • Local conservation districts • Kentucky Pride(for Eastern KY area)

  6. Project Outline • Contact Tom Biebighauser from the USDA Forest Service; he will help: • locate an ideal spot for wetland • decide about using a liner or not • in the actual construction • Develop an itemized list of materials needed and where to purchase.

  7. Project Outline continued • Contact Mary Kathryn Dickerson from KAEE, to propose a “Build a Wetlands” workshop during the annual fall conference. • Write a proposal and submit to the program chair of the KAEE Conference. amy@kentuckypride.com for approval. • Approved as a KAEE pre-conference workshop, Sept.8, 2006.

  8. Current Status (July 2006) • Going to Frankfort to pick up supplies for the wetland on Sept 14th, 2006. (must be picked up in person). • Make sure all the supplies were ordered and will be at Twenhofel on time. • Contacted Tom Biebighauser about speaking to the students the day before the construction.

  9. Resources • Wildlife Biologist Tom Biebighauser- tombiebighauser@fs.fed.us • KAEE contact-Mary Kate Dickerson- bingkate@epowerc.net • Kenton County Conservation District-www.kentoncounty.ky.org/bccd/grant

  10. Next Steps • Get principal and parent permission to allow students to participate in the construction of the wetland. • Teach several Lessons from WOW-The Wonders of Wetlands the entire week before the actual building of the wetland. • Develop interdisciplinary curriculum (science, math, social studies, and language arts) to be taught using the wetlands environment.
