  1. The Relationship of Trials, Wisdom & Faith James 1:5-8 March 18, 2018

  2. Trials & Wisdom

  3. Proverbs 3:5-6, 17 (ESV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. …Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

  4. Wisdom = Sophia Understanding for righteous/godly living

  5. Job 28:12, 23-24, 28 (ESV) But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? God understands the way to it, and He knows its place. For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.

  6. Psalm 111:10 (ESV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. Proverbs 1:7 (ESV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 9:10 (ESV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

  7. Albert Einstein

  8. How do you get wisdom? You ask God for it.

  9. C.S. Lewis

  10. Matthew 7:7–11 (ESV) Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

  11. Proverbs 1:5 (ESV) Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, Proverbs 15:12 (ESV) A scoffer does not like to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.

  12. How does God impart wisdom? • Through His Word

  13. Proverbs 1:2 (ESV) To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  14. How does God impart wisdom? • Through His Word • Through godly counsel

  15. Proverbs 15:22 (ESV) Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. Proverbs 11:14 (ESV) Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

  16. How does God impart wisdom? • Through His Word • Through godly counsel • Through circumstances • Through impressions He makes

  17. How do you get wisdom? You ask God for it… In faith without doubting.

  18. If we do ask in doubt… we “must not suppose that [we] will receive anything from the Lord”.

  19. Implications & Applications: • If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God for it ... but ask in faith, with no doubting. • Can you ask in faith? • Trusting Christ.
