This paper highlights the necessity to convert the MANET Working Group into IETF mode for protocol standardization.

MANET strategy Alex Zinin (zinin@psg.com) RTG AD
Why? • Very useful work is being done here, but... • Wide problem statement • Many competing protocols • Lack of WG-wide consensus • No signs of convergence • All of the above == research mode • This is an IETF WG though
Goals • Convert the WG to IETF mode: • Clear and focused problem statement • Focused WG charter, clear milestones • WG members working closely towards consensus • Design IETF MANET protocol STD • For the work that needs more research (yes, it is subjective)---move to the IRTF
Steps • Create an IRTF sub-group for MANET • move LANMAR, FSR, ZRP, TORA • Scope the charter to push DSR, AODV, OLSR, and TBRPF to EXP • When done: • this is the end of the research mode • define the engineering problem statement • IF agreed on the problem statement • update the charter with development of IETF protocol(s) that will go STD tracks
Plan of actions • We (WG chairs + ADs) will make the decision • Discuss it here • Discuss on the mailing list (nothing so far) • Announce the decision within a month after this meeting • Update the WG charter
Open Mike • Comments, please: • even if you agree ;-)
