  1. Clothing for Special Markets

  2. The Need for Special Markets • Some people need special clothing because of their age, physical limitations, and/or occupation.

  3. Occupation - Uniforms • are outfits or articles of clothing that are alike and distinguish a specific group of people. • Uniforms help identify a certain job. For example, police uniforms will distinguish a civilian from an officer. Common uniforms are mail carriers, military officers, doctors, waiters, and priests

  4. Age - Infants • Baby clothing must be comfortable, practical and safe • Comfort – babies are most comfortable in breathable, nonirritating garments • Practical – clothing must be designed for ease of changing to help keep them clean and dry • Safety – flammability issues in recent years has prompted the design of flame-resistant sleepwear. Another safety concern are types of fasteners. Buttons and trims that can be pulled off are a choking hazard. Lightweight zippers and snaps are best.

  5. Age – Elderly People • It is important for older people to maintain their self-esteem by looking attractive. Clothing can help. • Style features that accommodate for physical changes are shift-style dresses without fitted waistlines, A-line skirts, lowered necklines, elastic waistbands, knit fabrics and easy care fabrics. • Apparel for older people should be attractive as well as functional, conservative, yet fashionable. Physical and psychological needs must be considered.

  6. Physical Limitations – People with Disabilities • Disabilities limit activities and therefore comfortable, functional and attractive clothing is needed • Appropriate apparel can enhance independence and productivity • Need clothing that simplifies the task of dressing, has easy laundering care, is soft and absorbent, allows for easy movement. • Self-help features and styles are needed – zippers, Velcro, wrap-around styles, specially placed pockets, etc.
