Welcome to TB133Strategies for the Technical Professional • This course – Strategies – introduces new ITT students to the college experience • Part of this course’s goal is to ensure that you have all the materials and information you need for a successful college career at ITT – which means lots of paperwork at the beginning!
Student Handbook • You have to sign papers sayingyou received and understood the Student Handbook • These signed papers must be on file • Basically, you promise to be honest, not hurt anyone, use common sense, and treat the people and machines at ITT with the respect they deserve • You are signing a legal document, so ask questions if you have any
TB133 Course Syllabus • The student syllabus, which you just received, includes course objectives, resources, and a weekly outline – which may be revised as we move through this course!
Personal Data Sheet • The Personal Data Sheet is basic information I need to know about you • I have to be able to contact you to do my job – which is get you through this course successfully • I will use your ITT email address – not your personal address - so check your ITT email daily. • Special instructions will be emailed if you miss a class!
Immunization/Diploma Sheet • You must submit proof of immunization and High School / GED to ITT • Immunization is a NYS Department of Health Law, not something ITT can ignore and still stay in business • The sheet is unofficial confirmation just for me that you talked to the registrar about your paper work • This sheet makes YOU check your status so there are no surprises • Keep coming to class even if your paperwork is not up to date
Classmates • The class activity will help you meet your classmates • You have a great deal in common with your classmates • You are also a unique individual
Activity • Break into groups of five or six people • Introduce yourself and try to learn the other people’s names • One person should WRITE DOWN a list of two things per person in the group that make them special • The class will try to match the students to the characteristics • For example: Guess who in this room has 6 grandchildren and a large Elvis CD collection
Example • A. Two kids and a Harley • B. Plays drums, knows the mayor • C. Speaks French, write poems • Who do you thinkis A?, B?, C? Bob Alice Todd
Course Description • The course is devoted to three primary topics: • Technical tools • Life skills • Study skills • The topics we will cover in this course are of vital importance to your success not only at ITT, but in your prospective career.
Classes • Two parts: Theory and Practice • Theory: Theory Room #_____ • Theory day and time: _____________ • Practice: Lab Room #_______ • Practice day and time: ____________ • Bring to every class: • Textbook • Paper, pencil, etc (calculator for GE184!) • Homework that is due
Schedule • Plan on being in class and lab the full time • Short breaks every hour or so • 11 class meetings • Numerous projects • Quizzes every week • Grade depends on your class work, homework, and class participation • You have to be here to participate in class
Labs • Every week you will have a two hour lab session • Most labs are projects you start and finish at school • If you must miss a class, you may need a tutor’s help to do the lab project • It is MUCH easier to come to class
Evaluation • Check your Student Syllabus for details on content and grading • Exercise 30% • Labs 35% • Quizzes 15% • Course Project 20% Total 100%
Grade Scale • A 90 - 100% 4.0 • B+ 85 - 89% 3.5 • B 80 - 84% 3.0 • C+ 75 - 79% 2.5 • C 70 - 74% 2.0 • D+ 65 - 69% 1.5 • D 60 - 64% 1.0 • F <60% 0.0
Requirements/Expectations • Come to class on time – EVERY CLASS! • Turn in your assignments when due • Points may be subtracted on unexcused, late assignments • Participate in class • Plan on 2-3 hours of homework every week – sometimes more! • Create a study schedule and reserve this time for TB133
Use Common Sense • Come to class on time, prepared to work until the end of class • Be courteous, respectful, honest, and helpful to your classmates and the instructor • Avoid distracting other students during class (no cell phones, use laptops ONLY for class projects, eat quietly and clean up afterwards, no chatting, etc.)
Attendance Policy • Please sign and return a copy of the policy • The signed copy goes on file in the Dean’s office • Keep a copy in your notebook so you know what ITT expects of you
Contact List • As with any other professional commitment, you must contact ITT if you miss a class • Your contact list should be put in your binder • If at all possible, email your instructor before class, or phone a Dean and leave a message • Your participation grade depends on your contacting ITT if absent
Progress • You can check with me for your current grade in class anytime • If you are in danger of failing, you will be officially notified as soon as possible • If your grade is low, keep in contact with ITT so we can figure out how to best help you
Unit 1 Objectives • Describe strategies to adapt to life changes. • Identify how attitude affects personal success. • Describe strategies for personal motivation. • Identify ITT Tech school-level resources. • Identify and access components of the ITT Tech Student Portal. • Find academic program and career resource information on the ITT Tech Roadmap. • Identify the major components of the ITT Tech Virtual Library.
Reading Assignment • Strategies: Building on Your Best for Career Success • Chapter 1, “Getting Started at ITT” • The book has more information than can be presented in one class • Read the book to get all the helpful information you can from the course • You are encouraged to read ahead in the book
Lab Assignment • Log on to the network, student portal, your ITT email, and send emails • Visit WWW.J-ELBERFELD.COM • You will get complete details and as much help as you need to complete the assignment
Changes • The purpose of this unit is tohelp you deal with change, set goals, and get motivated • Going back to school is usuallyone of the biggest changes you have made in your life • This class will help you make that change successfully
What’s in this Course for Me? • Successful learners generally accept responsibility for their actions and their lives, deal with events in a positive manner, and have built-in drive and determination • Most have friends (or just people they know) who work together to succeed together, a teacher they trust, and an advisor who supplies good information • This course helps you adopt these characteristics of success
