FAQs • Less than 50% of those infected have symptoms. • So all of the times you circled “Pain” or “burning” only half of the people who have the illness got pain or burning. • So SOMEONE CAN BE INFECTED AND NOT KNOW!
Sex • Sex is defined as oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse. • Oral=Mouth to penis, mouth to vagina contact. • Anal= penis to anus (butt) contact • Vaginal= penis to vagina contact
Mutual monogamy • BOTH partners agree only to have sex with each other • Least risk of contracting a STI.
Serial Monogamy • Multiple mutually monogamous relationships that occur over time. • The more partners, the more risk of an STI.
Promiscuity • Multiple sex partners • Either at once or over time • Math: There are 52 weekends in a year. • Someone has sex with a different person every weekend= ______ sex partners/year. • If they keep up the same pattern the next year = _______ sex partners/total. • Year 3 = ____/total Year 4= ____/total • How many partners do you want someone to have before they start dating you?
Sexually Transmitted Infections Transmitted by: • skin to skin contact (touching) or • through sexual contact • Oral, anal, vaginal sex
STIs • Bacterial or parasitic STIs = CURE. • Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Crabs, Syphilis, Scabies
STIs • Viral STIs = NO CURE. • They will stay in the body forever. • HIV, Herpes, HPV, Hepatitis.

What is a simple way to remember which of the most common STIs are viral? • They all start with H • Hepatitis, HIV, Herpes, Human Papilloma Virus
Pics of Diseased, uh, parts. • Why do you have to see it? • These are consequences of an adult decision to have sex. • If you don’t want to deal with these consequences, abstinence (not having sex) is always a good idea.
Pics: Why? • If YOU do not respect yourself to protect yourself from STIs, nobody else will. • Remember, nothing says, “I Love You,” like getting an STI test done by a doctor.
Rules for the Pictures • Keep your groaning to yourself (suck it in as a whisper). • No yelling out things like, “Oh my gosh, I’d rather cut my parts off!” and the like. • This might be the first time you’ve ever seen the parts of the other gender, sorry about that.
Crabs (Pubic Lice) • Transmitted by sexual contact AND/OR touching. • This is the only STI that can be transmitted from a toilet seat. • Also transmitted by infected towels, bedding, and furniture if someone was infected used them before you did.
Scabies • Usually transmitted by sexual activity, but can be transmitted by touching. • It is common for children to be infected with scabies, they weren’t having sex, again, transmitted by touching.

Chlamydia • Transmitted only through oral, anal, and vaginal sex. • Easily spread even though someone doesn’t have symptoms. • Is this viral or bacterial? • So is there a cure or no cure?
Syphilis • On the rise across America. • Is this viral or bacterial? • Curable in the first 2 stages. • After stage 2, the bacteria goes to the brain and causes blindness, insanity, and then death.
Herpes 1 (Oral Herpes) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • People like to think of it as the “nice Herpes” but it can still travel to the genitals and do not nice things. • It’s a cold sore (a blister that usually appears on the lip or site of infection around the face. • It is estimated that 8 out of 10 adults have oral Herpes.
Herpes 2 (Genital Herpes) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • It’s estimated that 1 in 4 adults have Genital Herpes. • Many have never had symptoms and don’t even know they have it (even though they might be able to pass it on to others).
Human Papilloma Virus (Genital Warts) • Transmitted by touching or sex. • Can be transmitted even if warts are not visible. • This is the most common STI in America.
HIV/AIDS • HIV is the infection that causes AIDS. • HIV has few or no symptoms for to 10 years before symptoms of AIDS develop. • Can be spread during sex, exposure to infected blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk.
AIDS-associated Kaposi sarcoma • Skin sores that indicate that someone’s immune system is failing due to AIDS. • The sores become cancerous and can lead to the death of someone with an impaired immune system.
