  3. Definition • Any substance that is harmful to the body when ingested, inhaled, injected, or absorbed through the skin. • Any substance can be poisonous is enough is taken

  4. Teaching • The American Association of Poison Control Centers recommends teaching students that poisonings can occur by: • Eating (Pills they mistake for candy) • Drinking (Bleach) • Touching (Cyanide) • Inhaling (Ammonia)

Statistics • United States • 45% of poison exposures involved children younger than six, but the most serious cases occurred in adolescents and adults • 56% of poison exposures involved medications; other exposures were to household or automotive products, plants, mushrooms, pesticides, animal bites, and stings.
