  1. Chapter 5 Jesus the redeemer YEAR 8 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2012 SERVITE COLLEGE

  2. Jesus the redeemer restores our relationship with god • By giving into temptation Adam and Eve fell to the power of sin. • After the parents of the human race deliberately disobeyed God their relationship with him was damaged. • For Gods state of Original Justice to be achieved we needed our relationship with God to be healed. • Jesus the true son of God came to Earth to replenish and restore our faith and relationship with God and for the salvation of all humanity.

  3. Jesus the redeemer • To free us from sin Jesus to had to overcome sins power over human nature. • Jesus conquered evil by obeying God the father. This was the opposite of Adams disobedience. • “ I have come from heaven, not to do my own will, but to do the will of him who sent me.” (John 6:38)

  4. Example of Jesus overcoming sin • Jesus refused to give in to temptations from the devil. • When tempted in the desert by Satan Jesus proclaimed: “ Away with you, Satan! For scripture says: “The Lord your God is the one to whom you must do homage, him alone you must serve.” (Matthew 4:10)

  5. JUDAS AND SATAN • During the Last Supper the devil led Judas to betray Jesus to the Jewish religious authorities • “At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him.” • (John 13:27) • Judas led the soldiers to Jesus who was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaLzDhOuzGY

  6. Jesus wants to share his redemption with the human race • We can do this by: • Believing in him • Living as he taught • Joining the community of his Church through Baptism, the Sacrament he instituted so that all can enter his community. As people share in Jesus’ redemption, their relationship with God is renewed and restored

  7. Jesus restores harmony within and between people • Original sin caused a rift between humanity and God • Original sin resulted in Adam and Eve and therefore the human race experiencing inner conflict. • Jesus came to Earth to bring peace and unity to ourselves, others and God. • At his birth the angels proclaimed: “ Glory to God in the Highest heaven and on earth peace for those he favours” (Luke 2:14)

  8. Jesus shares his power to us to overcome sin and Satan • Jesus showed his power to overcome sin by conquering death. • Jesus is said to be the saviour because he has given us the capacity to resist sin. • He has done this by giving us the seven sacraments. • In each of the Seven sacraments we receive gifts from God and the Holy Spirit that enable us to fight sin and oppose temptations to do wrong. • The Sacraments give us the opportunity to come back to God and draw on his loving grace.
