The Analytical Framework (AFW) for School Improvement Aparna Kher, Ruchi Ghose, Saswati Paik Manthan July 2012
Why AFW ? To help Schools develop and decide on a road map for improvement in a systematic way, based on evidence and in a manner that engages all concerned stakeholders 2
What is the AFW? • A framework for planning action towards school development • It provides a structure, process and tools for analyzing the performance and practices of schools ultimately with the objective of improving educational outcomes • A group process, partially structured which allows stakeholders to collectively participate in discussions and decisions on School Improvement; decisions that are based on evidence
Overview of the Process • Data Collection through various tools such as questionnaire, observation and secondary data collection • Presentation, examination and discussion of the data to all stakeholders • Facilitated group reflection guided by a structured process • Examine and consolidate school’s strengths and challenges/weaknesses • Prioritize area of work, collaborative planning • Making Action Plans • Implementation 9
The Tools • School Profile for collecting information about the School • Community Profile for collecting information about the Community • Survey Questionnaire • Observation Sheet for Observing - Classroom Transactions - School Routines – Assembly, Lunch etc 10
The Process contd…. • While data is being tabulated and calculated school observations are conducted by teachers, SDMC members and a few parents • Once the data is available, it is presented in workshop mode to all stakeholders – HT, parents , teachers , SDMC . • Two Pilot Studies to test this process so far • Kaikondrahalli School • Sorhunse School
Workshop Process • Present all the data –factor wise and stakeholder wise • Build factor wise understanding with stake holders; definitions and case studies • Exercise of dream school – i.e. if you had to give a 100% - what would it look like • Examine current reality – the data is it valid, will you change it , how so • Complete worksheet 1
Continued… • Groups examine all factors • Complete worksheet 2 in groups
Contd.. • Each group completes this worksheet. • Presentation to the larger group– group also clarifies and adds, so we get a picture of all factors • Arrive at consolidated list of strengths & weaknesses of each factor
Continued … • Once they map this they can decide which projects that they want to take up • They do this using the prioritization matrix. Criteria to be decided . • Make action plans – responsibility; resources ; time lines; collaboration and support ; success indicators
Impact High Low Low High Feasibility
Principles • Developmental - open and flexible, allowing the specific context of each school to be taken into account so that each has the freedom to define their own levels, their own priorities and to find their own solutions • Taking cognizance of the issues and challenges in the education system, the levels of abilities, motivations, attitudes, and current level of practice • Focusing on both positive and negative aspects and practice of the school • Requires stakeholders to reflect on their own practice individually and collectively • Exploratory, non – judgmental in spirit
