  1. Feather Weight Challenge Design, construct, test and evaluate the lightest weight structure that will hold the water container suspended from the tester.

  2. Basic Vocabulary • All physical objects have a structure. • Part or parts of a building that actually hold it up and give it shape. • Your skeleton – structure for your body • What are the structural elements of a building? • Cannot be removed without damaging the strength/shape of a building

  3. Stress • Forces of gravity, wind and weight • Other things that push and pull on a building • If structural parts aren’t strong enough to withstand stress – structure will fail • Dead load: weight of the building • Live load: weight of objects go in and out of the building

  4. Tension • Major kind of stress • Involves pulling and stretching • Tensile cables have to be stretched taut to have structural strength • Material tends to become longer

  5. Compression • Pressing, pushing, and squeezing • Material tends to become shorter
