The Better Health Channel The Better Health Channel was launched in May 1999 by the Victorian Department of Human Services as part of the whole of government channels program that was designed to deliver government information in a consumer-centric way rather than through organisation-centric Departmental websites.

Management The Better Health Channel is administratively situated in the Health Division of the Department of Human Services but has a Steering Committee representing all relevant Divisions within the Department. The Steering Committee provides overall policy and strategic management of the initiative. There is also an Editorial Advisory Board that provides policy advice to the Steering Committee on content matters. Dr Graham Rouch recently retired Chief Health Officer of Victoria acts as the Editorial Board’s Editor in chief. There is a staff of 8 EFT to manage the project.
Content • The Better Health Channel is built on six main repositories of information • * Information (articles) • * Local services directory • * Calendar of events • * Health advice (monthly expert) • * Health news (from the ABC) • * Healthy recipes • There are also electronic postcards a medical dictionary and spell checker and, in development, a drugs dictionary.

Partnering in content creation • Content is developed in conjunction with third party expert bodies (Content partners). • Some of these Content partners are DHS and other Govt business units but most are NGOs. • The main source of content on the Better Health Channel is in the Information (or articles) section. • There are also Content partners for managing the translations, creating the audio, maintaining the Local services directory, etc. • There are 220 content partners.
Identifying content needs Content need is identified * By looking at National and State health information priorities * In response to user need (sophisticated search capture) * As a result of Content Partners’ priorities * In response to current events
Developing new content * Identify information content need (Topic) * Find suitable Content partner (reputable health advocacy or representation body) * Partner provides content (or Better Health Channel develops suitable content in conjunction with Partner) * Article edited to Better Health Channel house style * Article approved by Chief Health Officer * Article approved by Content Partner * Partner signs agreement * Article is proofread * Article ready for publishing
