Johannes Kepler Astronomer and Philosopher 1571-1630 59 Years old
Early Life Johannes Kepler was born December 27, 1571. He had six siblings, though three of them died in childhood. At the age of four he suffered from smallpox that left his hands crippled and his eyes permanently damaged. His father was killed when Johannes was just five years old.
Schooling He first went to school in 1576 when his family moved to Leonburg. In 1584 he went to a class at a convent school called Adelberg. Two years later he was allowed into a more advanced class in Maulbronn, this was also a Christian school. In 1789 he received a scholarship and he joined the University of Tuebingen where he studied philosophy and theology where he received his degree. Kepler did extremely well at both mathematics and astrology.
Contributions and Accomplishments Rudolph II appointed him as the imperial mathematician. In 1609 he published a book named Astronomia Nova which included his first two laws of planetary motion. A decade later he published Harmonice Mudi where his third law of planetary motion can be found. #1- Refered as the law of elliplses, explaining trhat planets are orbiting the sun in a circular orbit. #2- The law of Equal Areas explains the speed at which a certain planet will orbit the sun. The further away, the slower. #3- The law of harmonies compares the orbital period and radius of an orbit compared to that of other planets. These laws are still in effect today when teaching students how the planets orbit the sun and how other planets and moons effect us.
Death and Renown Johannes Kepler died in Regensburg, November 15, 1630. Like many scientists he was not known to many until after his death.
