About Our project • For our project, we are researching on: • Mainly the cultural references of paint colour • How the choice of paint colour of different cultures have evolved over the years • The special meanings of different colours to different cultures
Mentors Internal: --Mdm Chan External: --Dr Yeo --Mr Chin
Purpose? • Experienced seniors doing this project, so we took interest • Engineering week 2012 • Relevance to both sabbatical and school context
Rationale • Need for conservation of heritage sites • We want to look back into the past, maybe conserve or restore the building itself. • The use of different colours in different contexts (e.g. why is the Baba House blue? Why are most museums white or grey?) • Preservation of cultural roots by looking at our past
Thesis statement • The evolution of paint corresponds to the change of culture.
What are we gonna do? • Research on the different meaning of colours to different cultures • Find out in what way paint binders have changed through the times and cultures, also with emphasis on cultures.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT? • Mainly comprising of Internet research, but also references to our external mentors like Mr Chin and Dr Yeo. • Possibly a few more visits to other conserved buildings other than Baba House such as Chinatown and Little India • Use of oral history interviews on the archives or conducting an interview on our own about evolution of paint.
Resources • Use of readings by Mr Chin and Dr Yeo • Emailing Dr Yeo and Mr Chin to clarify our queries • Use of Internet • Analysis of paint scraps of KuoChuan House (if possible)
End result • Presentation of a report • Video (photo monatge) • Can include mindmap (in prep room)
