RULE 1090 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RULE 1091 This rule shall apply to all workers in which hazardous substances in solid, liquid or gaseous forms are manufactured, handled & used or in which flammable, irritating, offensive or toxic dusts, fibers, gases, mists or vapors are generated or released in quantities injurious to health
WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEM (WHMIS) Gives everyone the right to know about hazards of materials they work with & provides the means to find out that information it does this through: • Label • MSDS • Worker training & education
LABELS Supplier labels with volume more than 100ml must include: • Product identifier • Appropriate hazard symbol/s • Risk phrases (such as “dangerous if inhaled”) • Precautions (such as “wear rubber gloves”)
LABELS • First aid measures • Supplier identifier • Statement that a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available for the product
WORKPLACE LABELS Required when controlled products are produced on site or transferred from a supplier-labeled container. Label must include: • Product identifier • Safe handling instruction • Statement that MSDS is available
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) Technical document that summarizes the Health & Safety Information available about a controlled product. Must be readily available at worksite for use by the workers. MSDS must provide: • Product information • Hazardous ingredients • Physical data

EDUCATION & TRAINING Third part of the WHMIS. To protect themselves & ensure proper handling, workers need to know how to use the information on label & MSDS. Worker Training Programs must be developed, implemented & reviewed at least once a year.
EFFECTS OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES The effects of exposure to workplace safety hazards are sometimes immediate, painful & obviously damaging, but it is not easy to observe when & how the body cells are attacked by hazardous materials in the workplace. Many of the most disease do not occur until 10 to 30 years after exposure.
ROUTES OF ENTRY Hazardous materials in the workplace may cause disease in the body at four main sites: • Body – skin, lungs, intestines • Blood • Central Nervous System • Organs that remove toxic agents – liver, kidney, bladder
