Time Period Of Existence • 2 to 3 million years ago • Au. Africanus has a very difficult time being placed throughout history because their caves were made from limestone which deteriorated from rainwater. Also, where they're found, there is no volcanic rock of which to date them either. • Scientists estimate their existence by using bio-chronicle methods. (dating methods utilizing the relative chronologies of non-hominin animal fossils.)
Locations of Au. Africanus • The major dig sites have been in Sterfontein, Taung, and Makapansgat. The first set of remains found in Taung. • The creatures used to date Au. Africanus led scientists to believe that when they were alive, they lived in wooded areas. • All dig sites have been found in South Africa. • Their remains have been found limestone caves
Physical charateristics of Au. Africanus • Tend to be slender and small bodied. • Arms are slightly longer than their legs. • Fingers are curved. (this suggests that they were built for climbing trees.)
Similarities to modern humans • They stood and walked straight. • They had more modern human-like facial features. • Most bodily structures are like modern humans with the exception of a few details.
