US Technology Skills Gap by Gary Beach • We want to confirm that all chapters received a copy of the book – pleaseemail me if you think your chapter did not (jmarkowitz@simnet.org) • The reason we want you to have, read and share this book is to help you and others understand that the problem: • Is nationwide and worldwide • Has been decades coming – and is rooted in a failing education system • Is a little bit our own fault – we have not been going to schools and explaining to kids what IT people DO and why our jobs are fun, interesting, important • Can be addressed in part by following the Epilogue’s Recommendations: • Be IT Job Ambassadors • Emphasize the 5 C’s – collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, communication and confidence • Many thanks to Cognizant for buying and shipping these books to our chapters as part of their STEM outreach activities!

  3. Who is US2020? What is City Competition? • City Competition is a $1 million grant, shared among 5 cities – some cash, some in-kind consulting, all to scale up STEM outreach. Info on how your city can apply: http://us2020.org/city-competition/ ) • Four founding companies of US2020: • Tata Consultancy • Cognizant • Cisco • Sandisk • Applying requires you have a coalition of corporate, non-profit, and government people who agree to collaborate on STEM outreach for your city • Applying also requires you promise a matching $50K from your city (or donors) • The grant includes $50K cash, the remainder (~$200K) in consulting services to help you create the plan to scale up STEM Outreach and hire a local coordinator • DEADLINE for first round application: October 18, 2013

  4. STEM Outreach at SIMposium in Boston • SIMposium’s Opening Keynote speaker is YearUp CEO and Founder, Gerald Chertavian. YearUp provides technology training fordisadvantaged inner city youth, ages 18-24. • There is a SIMposium Workforce Development Track - Part of professional development is mentoring others, so STEM Outreach is valuable for those providing mentoring as well as those receiving it • There will be a Panel of Chapter STEM Outreach leaders talking about what works in their community – Gary Beach, author of the book you received, will also be on the panel • We will have a Lunch Table each day at SIMposium for OutreachLeaders to share ideas and best practices • Be sure to come to the Chapter Leaders Meeting on Sunday

  5. Who is NPower? What do they do? • NPower is a non-profit organization which provides a web-based platform to match tech professional volunteers to STEM outreach opportunities at K-12 schools, universities and non-profits (Career Day, mentoring, presentations, robotics coaching etc.) • Their volunteer matching service is FREE and they have offeredto create a custom SIM portal for our chapters to use. Benefits include: • Making it easy for individual SIM members to know about volunteer opportunities without requiring the SIM chapter to spend excessive time finding and matching opportunities to volunteers • Having a dashboard that lets the Chapter (and SIM national org) keep track of which chapter’s members are volunteering and for how many hours • WE ARE LOOKING FOR TWO CHAPTERS TO VOLUNTEERTO TEST AN NPOWER SIM PORTAL. (Chicago and NY chapters are already using NPower, so not eligible.) Please contact me if yourchapter is interested: jmarkowitz@simnet.org

What new STEM Outreach info is on simnet? • Visit simnet.org -- find Outreach on the menu on the left side of the Home page and look under STEM Resources – we have Websites, Videos and Events. • Shortly we will also have links to several STEM outreach organizationswhich are already working with one or more SIM chapters including: • NPower • YearUp • Genesys Works • Dark Horse Benefits • Please let me know if your chapter is working with a great STEM Outreach non-profit so we can put a link to their website from the SIM website.
