  1. Today in I.S.… Week #7 Quarter 2 (11/25-11/28) (calendar site) Monday, 11/25 • Have out: • Properties of Matters Notes • Matter Worksheet • I.S. Learning Goal: • I can describe the properties of matter Homework: Chemistry unit test, stamp sheet and notebooks due 11/ 27 Daily Question: What is matter? Activities/Assignments: Properties of Matters Notes Matter Worksheet

  2. Mixture Made of two or more substances- elements, compounds or both- that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined.

  3. Heterogeneous Mixture You can see the different parts

  4. Homogeneous Mixture So evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts

  5. Heat- transfer of energy –

  6. Exothermic- heat energy EXITS the system - ex. Combustion, burning http://www.graspr.com/videos/potassium-permanganate-and-glycerine-2

  7. Salt An example of an exothermic reaction is the mixture of sodium metal and chlorine gas which yields table salt. 2Na(s) + Cl2(g)  2NaCl(s) + energy http://www.schooltube.com/video/2fa9cb3e39064832b31d/Reaction-of-Sodium-and-Chlorine

  8. Endothermic- heat energy ENTERS the system - surroundings usually feel cooler ex. Cold packs, melting ice

  9. How do cold packs work? The outer pouch contains water. The inner pouch contains ammonium-nitrate. When you “pop” the inner pouch, the chemical reaction absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. This is an endothermic reaction. The temperature of the solution falls to about 35 F for 10 to 15 minutes.

Learning Goal: • I can describe and apply the properties of matter Daily Question: What is important that I need to know for the test? Homework: Chemistry unit test, stamp sheet and notebooks due 11/ 27 Activities/Assignments: Grade Matter Review Worksheet Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Worksheet Review Ionic and Covalent Bonding Worksheet Review

  12. Update Table of Contents TABLE OF CONTENTS

  13. Matter Packet Review • On your worksheet, read the directions and complete the packet! • This is review for the test on Tuesday. On test: • Periodic table trends (atomic number, mass, symbol name, metal, and non-metal) • Atomic History (dalton, rutherford, etc.) • Atom parts (protons, neutrons, electrons, quarks) • Bonding (ionic and covalent) • Diagrams of an atom (lewis structure and Bohrs models) • Matter definition • Chemical and physical changes • Mixtures • Phases of matter

  14. Today in I.S.… Week #7 Quarter 2 (11/25-11/28) (calendar site) Friday, 11/27 • Have out: • Blank Paper • Notebook rubric • Post Assessment Reflection • I.S. Learning Goal: • I can describe and apply properties of matter and atomic structure. • Activities/Assignments: • Chemistry Test • Answer questions on a separate sheet of paper • Answer the “Post Assessment” questions and staple to test answer. • Turn into bin. • Complete the reflections sheet for Notebook. • Put reflection sheet and stamp sheet in front flap of notebook and place at station 1.
