  1. 5.2 Evaluate and Graph Polynomial Functions

  2. Common Polynomial Functions

  3. Identify Polynomial Functions • Determine whether the function is a polynomial function. If so, state if it’s in standard form, it’s degree, type, and leading coefficient. (ex) h(x) = x4 – 1/4x2 + 3 ____________________ (ex) g(x) = 7x - √3 + πx2 ____________________ (ex) f(x) = 5x2 + 3x-1 – x ____________________ (ex) k(x) = x + 2x – 0.6x5 _____________________

  4. Evaluate a Polynomial • Use Direct Substitution. • (ex) f(x) = 2x4 – 5x3 – 4x + 8 when x = 3

  5. Practice Problems • Write the functions in standard from and state the degree, type, and leading coefficient. • (1). f(x) = 13 – 2x _________________________________ (2) p(x) = 9x4 – 5x-2 + 4 __________________________________ (3) h(x) = 6x2 + π – 3x __________________________________

  6. Use direct substitution to evaluate the polynomial function for the given value of x • (4.) f(x) = x4 + 2x3 + 3x2 – 7 x = -2 • (5.) g(x) = x3 + 6x – 5x2 + 1 x = 4

  7. Use Synthetic Substitution to Evaluate • (ex) f(x) = 2x4 – 5x3 – 4x + 8 x = 3

  8. Evaluate a graph. Determine the degree and if the leading coefficient is positive or negative. • Page 339 Blue Box • Solve Example 4 on page 339 • Solve 6 – 8 on page 339
