The Story of Six This guy • The idea of telling an entire story in six words dates back to Ernest Hemingway. • Hemingway is known for his minimalist writing style and economic use of language. • From Old Man and the Sea: “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” • Hemingway was challenged to write a whole novel in just six words.
The Story of Six • And so he did: • What’s the “story” here? What’s the beginning? The middle? The end? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”
How to Read a Six Word Memoir Let’s take this example from I Can’t Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous + Obscure Read + Note. What’s literally happening? Reread, Consider + Note. Why would this person tell us this? What’s being communicated about his/her identity, or life? Re-reread + Note Punctuation. Pay attention to punctuation, word order, and form. What does it add to the answers you came up with in #2? Re-re-reread + Note Style. Look for imagery, symbolism, alliteration, tone. How does this contribute to the piece? Wake up. Pee.
