Parental Mediation • Put computer in a common place in the house • Use Internet filters and blocks • Talk to children about the dangers of the Internet
Opposing Argument • Increasing Internet censorship is a violation of an Individual's freedom of speech • The Internet is not the only media outlet that contains harmful and violent content • It is a waste of federal funding
Access to Violent Content • The Internet provides several outlets where children find violent content • YouTube is one of the most popular place children can find videos containing violence • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ9T8u0BVAk
Schools • Valdosta State University does not block any web site based on content (Hively) • Oftentimes, colleges try to give students as much freedom as possible. • Many high schools do use Internet filters
Effects of Violence exposure • Children who are exposed to violence at a young age are 3 times more likely to be arrested than children who are not exposed (Connelly) • Children become more likely to exhibit anti-social and aggressive behavior • Children from the age of 8 to 18 spend more time in front of a computer than they do sleeping (Kaiser Family Foundation)
Censorship Laws • The Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 made it a criminal offense to sender display offensive material to persons under the age of eighteen using an interactive computer service (Lavell 353). • The Child Online Protection Act
Violence • Violence seems to be embraced by society • Violent Internet content is on the rise • Lawmakers must clearly define what is violent and what is not violent
Solutions • Parents and schools leaders being proactive • Using Internet blocks and filters • Congress passing and enforcing new censorship laws • Raise public awareness on the effect violent content has on children
