  2. The first I knew about the assessment system was when I was asked to write some questions........................... for an exam. I had no idea existed!

  3. Objectives for the Inset Day • Better understanding of RVC assessment processes • Understanding of how to get help • Practise some skills • Increase in confidence in role as examiner Please ask us lots of questions !!

Who are the Internal Examiners? • Examination board members • Established academics e.g. Lecturers/Profs etc. • Assistant Examiners • New academics and Assistant Lecturers • RVC non-academic staff • RVC veterinary qualified graduate students • Board members have the right to attend exam boards and vote (but we normally invite assistant examiners)

  5. Internal examiners • Primary responsibility for setting and marking exams • Academic Staff • Served 1y as Assistant Examiner • Attended introductory course for lecturers • Assessors from collaborating institutions • Attend examinations board meetings

  6. What would we like you to do? • Participate fully in the processes of formative and summative assessment • This presentation covers all the steps required for a summative assessment. Formative assessment is similar but requires fewer “regulatory” steps

Problems for New Examiners • Assessment not a “natural” skill (like teaching) • Assessment requires the bigger picture • Hard to find/understand • Assessment strategy is often discussed less than teaching • There is a temptation to do some assessment activities alone • Assessment may be very complex

  10. Internal examiners’ responsibilities Pre-examination • Submit questions (+model answers) commensurate with • Learning objectives • Level of knowledge expected • Attend standard setting, as requested

  11. Internal examiners’ responsibilities during the examination period • Attend exam (as required) • Understand role if acting as an examiner • Mark exam questions (as required) • Understand marking schemes and outcome targets • Attend meetings of Examination Board

  12. Internal examiners’ responsibilities after the examination • Respond to comments by External examiners • Anticipate modifications for following year • New items for question bank • New format? • Participate in feedback

  13. Chairman of Exam Board • Responsible for all aspects of the examination • Adhere to regulations • Recommend marking schemes • Identify/appoint examiners • Convene meetings • Approve results

  14. External examiners • Check that what we do is appropriate • Does the assessment fit the expected learning outcomes? • Are our students up to the standard of the award? • Check that we do what we say • Mark accurately • Run the exam fairly, according to the regulations

Examinations Office • Call for questions on the basis of a blueprint • Compile examination papers • Arrange marking schedules • Book rooms, invigilators etc. • Compile marks, check spreadsheets • Secretariat for examinations boards • Make sure we keep to the rules • Liase with external examiners

  16. Year/Module/Course Leaders • Increasingly responsible for deciding the content of the examination - the blueprint • Communication channel with the students

What do I need to do? • Respond to requests to participate in examinations but make sure you get help! • Material selection an objectives – course leader • Processes – examinations office or board chairman • Question writing – all of the above and a colleague • When all else fails mpead@rvc.ac.uk

  18. What do I need to do? • Read the information that the exams office sends out with question requests, marking schemes etc. • Refer student questions on time, place, marking schemes to the exams office • Get organised – check your diary and avoid other commitments in exam time
