RVC Examinations Inset DayInternal Examiner Roles & Induction Dr. Matthew Pead 6th January 2012
The first I knew about the assessment system was when I was asked to write some questions........................... for an exam. I had no idea existed!
Objectives for the Inset Day • Better understanding of RVC assessment processes • Understanding of how to get help • Practise some skills • Increase in confidence in role as examiner Please ask us lots of questions !!
Who are the Internal Examiners? • Examination board members • Established academics e.g. Lecturers/Profs etc. • Assistant Examiners • New academics and Assistant Lecturers • RVC non-academic staff • RVC veterinary qualified graduate students • Board members have the right to attend exam boards and vote (but we normally invite assistant examiners)

What would we like you to do? • Participate fully in the processes of formative and summative assessment • This presentation covers all the steps required for a summative assessment. Formative assessment is similar but requires fewer “regulatory” steps
Problems for New Examiners • Assessment not a “natural” skill (like teaching) • Assessment requires the bigger picture • Hard to find/understand • Assessment strategy is often discussed less than teaching • There is a temptation to do some assessment activities alone • Assessment may be very complex
