  1. Mackenzie Biodiversity Planning • Scope • Process • Analysis • Lumping • Recommendations • Draft Seral Targets • Priority Landscape Units for OGMA development Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  2. Biodiversity Planning: Scope • Develop biodiversity objectives to implement recommendations in the Mackenzie LRMP. • Develop objectives for mature plus old forest targets, old forest targets, interior old forest targets, and young forest distribution. • Develop mapped old forest management areas. Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  3. Process for Biodiversity Planning • Mackenzie Landscape Objective Working Group (LOWG) made up of two groups: Data Management and Analysis Team (DMAT) and a First Nations Team (FNT) • LRMP monitoring group • Agency experts • Outside experts as required • Consultation with First Nations and Public Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  4. Biodiversity Planning: Analysis • Analysis of Natural Disturbance Unit (NDU) Ecology and LRMP • 12 Scenarios • Mapping of Interior Old 2004 • 200 meter buffering • Old >140 • Mapping of Old and Interior Old Forest 2005 • Old:>140 except SBSmk1 & SBSmk2 >120 • Buffered using age class 4 and older for pine • Buffered using age class 5 and older for spruce and balsam • Mapping to help with OGMA delineation Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  5. Analysis of Old Forest Retention Scenarios • Two main scenarios LRMP and a blended Natural Disturbance Unit (NDU) scenario (variable % of the minimum of the natural range of variation) • Area retention target for blended NDU scenario 1,305,458 ha with a 2.5% reduction in the timber flow from the base case • Area retention target for LRMP scenario (including mature + old retention) 888,044 ha with a 0.3% reduction in the timber flow from the base case Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  6. Recommendations Aspatial Targets • Implement recommendations from LRMP for mature plus old and old forest targets and implement interior old targets from biodiversity guidebook • Old definition >140 years for all BEC units except SBSmk1 and SBSmk2 >120 years and deciduous in BWBS >100 years • Small parks (Heather Dina, Muscovite Lakes, Ed-Bird Estella) inside a landscape unit can contribute to the old forest retention target Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  7. Mature Plus Old and Old Forest Retention Targets (LRMP) Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  8. Mature Plus Old and Old Forest Retention Targets (LRMP) Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  9. Mature Plus Old and Old Forest Retention Targets (LRMP) Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  10. Implementation of LRMP Seral Targets • Lumped small landscape units (RMZs, subzones) of similar biodiversity emphasis for target purposes • Lumped similar Biogeoclimatic (BEC) units for target purposes • Rationale for Lumping • Some landscape units and BEC units are too small for management of targets • These smaller units can lead to fragmentation (lots of small blocks) and are not suitable for managing for the natural regime Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  11. Lumped Landscape Units for Mature + Old and Old Targets • Akie, Akie River (enhanced) • Gaffney, Manson River (enhanced) • Discovery, Duckling (general) • Gillis, Klawli (general) • Misinchinka, Tudyah B (enhanced and general) for old target only • Philip, Philip Lake, Tudyah A (enhanced and general) for old target only • Connaghan Creek, Eklund, Jackfish, South Germansen-Upper Manson (special) • Lower Akie, Lower Pesika (special) • North Ingenika, Swannell Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  12. BEC groups for Mature + Old and Old Targets • ESSFwc, ESSFwk2 • ESSFmc, ESSFmv2, ESSFmv3, ESSFmv4, SWBmk • SBSvk, SBSwk2 • BWBSmw1, BWBSwk2 • BWBSdk1 • SBSmk1, SBSmk2 • ESSFmcp, ESSFmvp2, ESSFmvp3, ESSFmvp4, ESSwcp3, SWBmks • BEC groups containing <2,000 ha of Crown forested land base (gross) are combined with the most appropriate BEC group for target achievement in a landscape unit or landscape unit group Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  13. Patch Size Distribution • Patch size distribution not part of objectives for the following reasons: • Ongoing work by Caribou RIG group. Patch size recommendations from this group may be different that the ones suggested in the LRMP • Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  14. Old Growth Management Areas (priority list) • Philip, Philip Lake, Misinchinka, Tudyah, Kennedy • Fox and Obo River • Ingenika and North Ingenika • Mesilinka • Osilinka and Duckling • Gaffney and Jackfish • Parsnip Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  15. OGMA and Mapping Recommendations • Develop only a potion of the OGMA target because of issues related to Mountain Pine Beetle and other planning initiatives such as Caribou Management (RIG) • Licencees to show remaining portion of Old Forest Retention in their operational plans Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  16. Percentage of Old Forest Target to Map as OGMAs Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  17. Development of Candidate OGMAs • Jackfish, Eklund, South Germanson – Upper Manson, Connaghan Creek (Integrated Land Management Bureau/Ministry of Forests) • Klwali, Gillis (BC Timber Sales) • Gaffney, Manson (Canadian Forest Products) • Parsnip (Abitibi) Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005

  18. Comments on Biodiversity Planning • Send comments to Les Hawkins • Integrated Land Management Bureau, 325 - 1011 4th Avenue, Prince George, V2L 3H9 • Fax: (250) 565-6629 • E-mail: Les.Hawkins@gov.bc.ca Mackenzie LRMP Nov. 17/2005
