DO NOW: • What do you think of when you hear the term “pollution”?
Objectives: Identify types of pollution Compare point and non-point pollution Explain biological magnification Pollution
I. Pollution • Any harmful material that enters the environment • Pollutants may enter: • Land • Chemicals • Radiation • Trash – non-biodegradable
2) Air: • Smoke • Burning fossil fuels • Noise 3) Water • Chemicals • Oil • Pesticides & fertilizers • Heat
A. Point Pollution • Comes from a single source • Examples: Ramapough Mountain Indians Sue Ford Over Toxic Contamination BP Deepwater Horizon 2010
B. Non-point Pollution • Comes from many different sources • Example:
III. Pollutants may pose health risks: • Irritants – eyes, breathing passageways, skin • May cause diarrhea • Reproductive problems • Death
IV. What happens when pollutants enter an organism? • Consider food chain:
Many pollutants cannot be broken down by organisms • Get stored in fat • Over time, they build up in an organism – bioaccumulation • As pollutants pass up the food chain, they increase - biological magnification
Effects on Humans • Humans have been warned to watch the amount of large predatory fish they eat • Why??
