This presentation conducted by Dave Carr explores the synergy between Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM2015). Highlights include using PAS 1192-6 for health and safety information in 3D models and how the BIMsafe application ensures compliance. Essential principles of BIM Level 2, BIM requirements, standards, and specifications are discussed, emphasizing a collaborative approach towards project and asset information management. The relevance of CDM 2015 requirements, Pre-Construction Information (PCI), and BS 5795 standards are explained in detail, providing valuable insights for duty holders and designers in the construction industry.

Synergy of CDM (2015) and BIM A discussion on the synergy between the requirements of Building Information Modelling (BIM) the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM2015) How PAS 1192-6 should be used to incorporate health and safety information in 3D models and a brief outline of how the BIMsafe application can achieve PAS-1192-6 compliance
BIMsafe Limited A collaboration between and Presentation by Dave Carr (Managing Director of BIMsafe and Callsafe)
Fundamental principles for BIM Level 2 • The Government has required all central government funded projects to be fully collaborative 3D BIM by 2016, with all project and asset information being electronic. • The BIM process should: • Create a common language applicable to all; • Allow decisions to be data driven via a single version of the truth; • Deliver benefits by using data and embracing efficient use of technology; and • Bring process, people and technology together
BIM Requirements • Exchange Information Requirements (EIRs) (BS EN ISO 19650-1) • (Formally Employers Information Requirements in BS 1192 & PAS 1192-2); • BIM Execution Plans (BEPs)in response to the EIR; and • Information Delivery Plans & Responsibility Matrix (BS EN ISO 19650-1 & BS EN ISO 19650-2) • (Formally Information Delivery Table in BS 1192 & PAS 1192-2) – clarifies the information to be exchanged on a project, data ownership and standards.

Extract from BS EN ISO 19650-2Section 5 – The Appointing Party • Nominate individuals to undertake the information management functions • Establish the project’s information requirements • Establish the project’s information delivery milestones • Establish the project’s information standard(s) • Establish the project’s information production methods and procedures • Establish the project’s reference information and shared resources • Establish the project’s common data environment • Establish the project’s information protocol
BS EN ISO 19650-1 (Figure 2)Hierarchy of information requirements BIM Execution Plans (BEPs)
CDM 2015 Requirements • All duty holders to cooperate, coordinate and communicate • The Client must provide the Pre-Construction Information (PCI) • The Principal Designer must collate and distribute the PCI to others • All Permanent Works Designers (PWDs) must coordinate their designs with other Designers, incl. Temporary Works Designers (TWDs) CDM 2015 & BS 5795 • All designers must provide information about their designs, significant risks and any assumptions made CDM 2015 & BS 5795
Pre-Construction Information (PCI) • The client has the main responsibility for the PCI. The PD should help the client bring the information the client already holds (such as any existing health and safety file or asbestos survey). • The principal designer should then: a) identify any gaps in the information which it is necessary to fill; and b) advise the client on how the gaps can be filled and help them gathering the necessary additional information. c) provide, as far as they are able to, the necessary information, in a convenient form, to help designers and contractors who: • are being considered for appointment; or • have already been appointed, to carry out their duties.
Pre-Construction Information (PCI) When the PCI is complete it must include proportionate information about: a) the project, such as the client brief and key dates of the construction phase; b) the planning and management of the project such as the resources and time being allocated to each stage of the project and the arrangements to ensure there is cooperation between duty holders and that the work is coordinated; c) the health and safety hazards of the site, including design and construction hazards and how they will be addressed; d) any relevant information in an existing HSF.
PAS 1192-6 Specification for collaborative sharing and use of structured Health and Safety information using BIM PAS 1192-6 states • “The traditional tools of risk management used by H&S professionals, documenting safe systems of work through method statements base on risk assessments are variable in quality” • “There is a theory gap in the understanding of how to develop, use and apply these tools within information systems and digital processes” • “This PAS sets out to bridge this gap, explain how H&S information can be identified, shared and used by the key players in the construction process”
PAS 1192-6 Specification for collaborative sharing and use of structured Health and Safety information using BIM Each designer shall examine the H&S information requirements set out in their contract and the EIR to: • identify and include the stated and apparent hazards and risks in their approach to design risk management (6.3.5). • identify and include the client specified design risk management tasks in their approach to design risk management (6.3.5). • identify and schedule the H&S information required by the client; and determine the purpose of the H&S information required and the criteria for providing such information to the client
