But Will they Do It? • Strategies for Behavior Modification • Develop ordinances and policies to deal with solid waste management issues • Provide equally-accessible alternatives • Measure and demonstrate financial benefits • Try trial-runs or small-scale pilot projects • Get the community involved in the building process • Conduct Education and Outreach

  8. Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy • Start small – include one division or program and expand to other areas • Limit research needed to find green products – easy guide on what is best, better, and least desirable • Do not start from scratch…there are many examples out there

  9. Policies and Ordinances • Allow for public input during the process • Make the policies, ordinances and consequences known • Enforce them! • Provide assistance with compliance when new policies in place

Show the Financial Benefits • Keep track of tonnage, numbers, cost • Determine the cost of proposed investment and cost of no action if applicable • Calculate the payback period • Simple payback = Cost of Investment/Annual Savings • Baler Example: $10,600/$14,000 = .76 year Consider developing an incentive program

  11. Trial Runs and Pilot Projects • Implement changes in stages • Start a project in one location or one part of a location • Be persistent, yet patient • Remain actively involved in the process • Encourage and recognize the efforts of those involved

Environmental Outreach • Explain why • Get the kids involved • Relate efforts to resources significant to the community • Get people outside and involved – what is appreciated will be protected • Use various media – radio station, newspaper, video, hands-on activities, signage • Share your own experiences • Make connections with community members

  19. Going Green Workshops • Offered at staff and community gatherings • Simple, inexpensive things to reduce waste, save energy and save money • Hands-on activity: Make a non-toxic homemade cleaner to take home and use • Cleaning Scrubber: Baking soda, liquid dishsoap, glycerin (if storing)
