Poor Men’s Medieval Clothing • During the High Middle Ages all classes of people wore this knee length tunic and long tailed hood combination. • Medieval clothing history traditionally begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476.   10. Wealthy Men’s Medieval clothing • Both males and females of the upper classes were wearing the tunic as a basic garment. In the west, the north brought trousers, fitted tunics, and hoods. • Crusaders brought back new materials and new styles. Fabrics such as silks, sating, damasks, brocades, and velvets were included. • Men wore trousers and stockings. The stockings became so high in the high gothic period that trousers were almost eliminated. In the mid 12th century stockings reached mid thigh and were made to cover short trousers.

  13. Types of Merchant Guilds • Each Guild was set up for a particular type of product • Butchers Guild, Blacksmiths Guild, and Woodworker’s Guild were three types of Guilds • Grain Merchants needed to be wise in mathematics and negotiations.

MEDIEVAL MEDICINE • Most medieval medicines were "simples" made of herbal ingredients, which were taken raw or in teas • Treacle was considered a cure-all. • The formula for treacle stems from a recipe developed by the Greek physician Galen and includes more than 60 ingredients, including the roasted skin of vipers. It took 40 days to make and 12 years to mature.

Medieval Knights • Knights were professional soldiers, high in the order of chivalry, bearing the most noble arms, and riding the best horses. • Even in peacetime knights looked for conflicts in which to engage. • Knighthood was conferred by a gentle blow on the neck or shoulder with the flat of a sword, sometimes with much ceremony. The "dubbing" would take place in public accompanied by fanfares and music. Knights could also be created in the field of battle without any fanfare or ceremony.

About The Feudal System • The Feudal System was the way of life in Medieval times and if you failed to follow it you could be killed for treason. • If you worked hard enough and did enough good deeds you could advance in the system but it was uncommon to advance past a knight or noble • More on the Feudal System
