Physics 0160 Labs Meenakshi Narain January 21, 2009
The Goal of the Labs • Physics is EXPERIMENTAL science! • Deepen your understanding of physics by applying it experimentally • Learn how to plan and build an experiment • Get an experience in taking and processing experimental data • Master writing the reports on the work you have done
Lab Course Structure • For FOUR different experiments you will design, build and take data. • Vibration and Waves. • Light Wave Propogation • Interference and Diffraction • Quantum Physics • Each experiment (“unit”) takes two weeks to complete • You will work in pairs on planning and conducting the experiment, but each of you will have to submit an independent report • Late reports would result in a reduced grade (1 point per week penalty, up to 5 points maximum, out of 10)
Lab People • Prof. Meenakshi Narain (B&H 524, x3-2364) Physics 0160 Lab management email: Meenakshi_Narain@brown.edu Subject Line should contain “ph0160 Lab” • failure to do so may lead to the email go un-noticed Office hours: Monday: 1:30-2:30pm, Tuesday: 11am-noon or by appointment • Mr. Dean Hudek (B&H 221, x32062) Instructional Lab DirectorDean_Hudek@brown.edu • Mr. Ken Silva (B&H 141, x33061) Introductory Lab managerKenneth_Silva@brown.edu • TA’s – TBA
Important Information • By Jan 28th, you have to SIGN UP for one of the SIX lab sessions • Lab schedule will be posted on the doors of Rooms 136 and 150 and on the LAB WEBSITE by Jan 31st. • You are allowed to attend ONLY THE SESSION YOU HAVE CHOSEN – TA’s won’t accept anyone not in his/her session • You MUST attend all the lab sessions to get a credit for the lab • If you have an EMERGENCY, you must obtain a permission to attend a make-up session from me • While lab grade contributes 20% of your grade, a no credit in the lab portion of the course would result in an NC grade for the entire course • Your FIRST LAB SESSION (ORIENTATION) STARTS the week of Feb 2nd come prepared with design ideas for the first experiment, as the design will be due by the end of the first day of labs
